Forums - Sony - IGN GIVES LAIR A 4.9

Wow ,IGN sure hates the PS3 .Excepting the positive Warhawk review they always give the PS3 version some lower score even if the other mags give the same ,they dont say when the PS3 version is the best (as in Tiger Woods 08 ) and they give the lower score for PS3 games .

Game surely has some issues with the gameplay ,but come one this review is just pathetic .It sounds as if the reviewer was just plain bad playing it and got frustrated .

I hope this wont hurt Lair sales ,after all Mario Party 8 was massacrated by the critics and is selling like hotcakes .

I am not surprised that Lair didn't rate highly, although I am surprised that it scored under 5. Their have been rumblings that the game wasn't very good for the past few months. Factor 5 hasn't made an excellent game since Rogue Squadron 2 launched on Gamecube. I never figured Lair would be a 9+ game, but up until recently I always assumed that it would be in the 7 to 8 range. Given the budget and the dev time, Factor 5 should have done better.

I think what bugs me most is the technical problems. Factor 5 has always been one of the best devs at squeezing maximum performance out of hardware. They did things on Turrican on Genesis that most devs couldn't do on SNES. Rogue Squadron on N64 was technicallly impressive with or without the expansion pack. Rogue Squadron 2 on GC was so impressive at the time, no one thought it was in game footage. Even Rogue Squadron 3, which had horrible ground missions, was technically impressive. RS3 pushed more polygons with all effects that any game of produced last generation. So for them to bothc Lair's gameplay and game engine (Frame rate issues) is not a good sign.

Diomedes, if you feel IGN in biased against PS3, post some data to back it up. I know with the 1UP issue Nanzatips posted data showing that on average 1UP rates Wii titles far lower than they do PS3 and 360 games. If IGN is doing the same thing show it.

Nah. If this game is as poor as this review points it should finish in misery. Good sale would be an inducement leading to sequel. I don't want shitty games on PS3. I don't want shitty equivalents of MP8 no matter how well this crap would sell. There is really great lineup of PS3's titles.

It failed. Shame, nothing more. Factor 5 crew should be fired and obligated to social works until they are 70...

Well unfoutunately I dont have the kind of time or interest in these battles to spend some  hours  searching for the IGn reviews for PS3 games ,pitting them against the 360 versions ,and then looking for other mags reviews on both versions to prove my point providing links to them all ..it would be painfult o read for you as well .I know what I am saying ,and you can check it too .Just to give some examples you have the reviews of Madden 08 ,The Darkness ,Heavenly Sword ,Tiger Wood 08 or GRAW2 .The most recent ones .Examples :

GRAW2 is said to be identical to the 360 version plus some Sixaxis functions (that can be disabled ) but gets a 8.3 when the X360 version receives a 9.1 .WHy in hell if they are identical it receives nearly a whole point less ??

The Darkness ,all the mags I have read say both versions (PS3 and 360 ) are identical .Well the 360 version gets nearly half a point more for some framerate issues issued from the reviewer imagination .

Tiger Woods 08 ,mags as Gamespot have pointed that the game is identical but controls slighty better in the PS3 for pad precission things .IGN doesnt even mention it and gives both versions the same score .

Madden 08 ,both versions are only different because the frame rate .Most mags as Game Informer ,Game Pro ,Gamespot etc have given both games the same score ,others as 1Up (quite vocal against the PS3 ) have cut the PS3 version down half a point to 8.5 .IGN butchers it one whole point to 7.7 and makes people believe the Wii version is better by giving it a better score when the Wii version is an absolute turd .

Heavenly Sword .Well the game got a 6 from Edge .Right ,Edge are fucking hard on games and you have always to count them to reduce by 1-2 points the score and to give humility lessons to hyped games .Aside from that score it has received solid scores between the 8 and the 9 in every magazine ....excepting of course IGN who has given it a 7 becasue short at 6-7 hours .Exactly the same durations as Gears of War but that one wasnt brought down because of that of course .

Just some examples .

I am not saying Lair doesnt have issues ,for sure it has .But I think the game at least is a 7 .And looking at the examples I gave to you you can see I dont trust too much IGN for PS3 scores .That depends also on the reviewer etc ,but they seem to just cut the PS3 games score just because they are out some month later ,because some other version has a downloadable extra(paying )  somewhere or just because they are putting some exigences on the games that they dont on other plattforms .If a Wii game has PS2 like graphics (as Madden ) its allright ,if Gears of War is short is allright because it has fantastic graphics etc ......at the same time the PS3 games cant be short or have slighty worse graphics than any other version or they are heaveily critized by that .At the same they dont weight  ever that the PS3 online gaming is offering about the same as the payinf 360 one for free .They just assume that if you have a 360 you have the hard disk and are paying the Live fees and put that against the PS3 versions without counting you are paying to play it online .With the PS3 they take for granted the advantages (Sixaxis ,free online ) but put the weight over the little details to put down the score if possible .Of course there are some good IGN scores for PS3 games as Resistence ,Motorstorm ,Ninja Gaiden Sigma ,Rainbow Six Vegas or more recently Warhawk ,but that doesnt contradict what I am saying .IGN philosophy toward the PS3 and what to expect for it is unfair compared to what they demand from other plattforms .

They should release a demo for Lair so PS3 owners can try it and decide for themselves if they can deal with the controls. With so many games coming out this fall I think it is essential to showcase your game in order to stand out and though it is nice to get good reviews you can't always depend on them. I mean they have had demos in the shows so they have something ready. I know some people will still blindly buy anything if they are looking forward to it but with so many games and $60 price tags a demo would surely be appreciated. This review is bad for Lair no matter what anyone thinks as it will bring its overral score down which wasn't that high to begin with. Again bring on a demo and let the ps3 owners decide for themselves if they should spend $60 on this game.

Dude... I must admit I laughed my arse off at those pics, but that's clearly trolling.  Lair looked to me to have a lot of promise.  I WILL be getting a PS3 soon and I was really hoping this title would ROCK as I'm a huge fan of the Panzer Dragoon early games and was hoping this would take that idea to the next level.  I can't believe they force the sixaxis controls as the only option, though.  I would have to guess that Sony put a lot of pressure on Factor 5 for that to have happened as *somebody* on the development and test team *had* to say at some point: "Hey, this sixaxis thing isn't quite right.  Let's go analog as well so we don't alienate users".

I know a lot of people have posted that it takes time to get used to the controls but I think they are missing the point.  The whole idea in gaming is to create an immersive experience where *you* don't have to adapt to anything and everything just fits right in place.  I don't mind making the effort *sometimes* but generally if I can't control it fairly well right off the bat, I move on...  Again, shame on Factor 5 for not giving an analog option.

BTW, anyone know the approximate budget, team size, and development timeline on this one?  I gotta figure it's pretty darn big and this is going to really, really hurt Factor 5 if it bombs.

I hate trolls.

Systems I currently own:  360, PS3, Wii, DS Lite (2)
Systems I've owned: PS2, PS1, Dreamcast, Saturn, 3DO, Genesis, Gamecube, N64, SNES, NES, GBA, GB, C64, Amiga, Atari 2600 and 5200, Sega Game Gear, Vectrex, Intellivision, Pong.  Yes, Pong.

This a pathetic

IGN isn't baised against the PS3, but of course that can't be true since Lair is a great game and has recieved stellar reviews from everyone.

But since you want to claim they are biased, then I better not hear you talking about IGN giving any PS3 game a good review. You can't have things both ways, claiming a source is baised when they give a bad score but mentioning their review for a game that scores well.

Oh really? Let us take a look.

Ign Ps3 reviews. 0.6% above average

Ign wii reviews. 0.5% above average

Ign 360 reviews. 0.3% above average

http://www.gamerankings.com/itemrankings/sitedetails.asp?siteid=1188

Conclusion: What you actually mean is ''Im a PS3 fanboy and they are rating the games I hope will sell the system lowly.''

The only claim you can possibly make about ign being biased towards the ps3. Is that they prefer it to the wii and 360.

Turkish says and I'm allowed to quote that: Uncharted 3 and God Of War 3 look better than Unreal Engine 4 games will or the tech demo does. Also the Naughty Dog PS3 ENGINE PLAYS better than the UE4 ENGINE.

The difference between Mario Party 8 and Lair is:

a) Mario Party 8 is not aimed at the hardcore audience that reads every review and checks out Gamerankings...the people who buy it have lower standards.

b) Mario Party is old and played-out - but it's still a solid series. I personally think a Mario Party game is almost a requirement for anyone who likes party games.
