Chrono Cross came out in 98. Then, Magus and Lynx screwed with time and changed history. Rubang is actually right about this one.

1998 pwns 1988 just because of Starcraft and FFT in America. This was just a 2nd rate copy of my thread BTW. The better and first thread is here
http://www.vgchartz.com/forum/thread.php?id=63109&page=1
This is so hard thread to say anything since
1:I was born in 1991
2:When your personal best game ever is launched it makes that year the best (Grandia)
3:When your fauvorite consoles was launched
Take my love, take my land..
A shameful lack of Master System classics in your list RubangB. You can't forget that 1988 also gave us:
Golvellius
Kenseiden
Phantasy Star
Power Strike
Shinobi
PS. How could you list Simon's Quest? yuck

This! I didn't play it until they made the collection for the GBA but thought it was really good especially for such an old game.

It was nice in the NES days because so many games were a brand-new experience, oftentimes like the OP said nothing like anything else you'd played previously. Games could take risks and be successful; games could be many "genres" at once (Zelda, Zelda II, Guardian Legend, North vs. South, etc.)
Games today are really fucking boring.
Also games were better in the old days because reality went out the window and let you do wacky stuff and get involved in some weird worlds. Today games are purposely based in "reality" so much that's it removes the adventure and immersion (nevermind that standing still heals you in every game today, either -- that's totally real)
edit: Phantasy Star is definitely one of the most important games of all time, in terms of its contribution to JRPGs and how big that genre became.

1952
that year was the best in gaming because it gave us
Shigeru Miyamoto
and thus it consequently gave us:

lol.
I'll say that 2008 was better. LBP, GTA IV, Wii Fat, MK Wii, Brawl, and Metal Gear Solid 4. And gears 2.

Altered Beast Other than the silly So Bad It's Good- soundbites, a greek zombie-lycanthrope-thing gorging on animal steroids and okay music, I don't see why this one was so great. Has nothing on the first Double Dragon IMO. Battle Chess I guess it's okay, but the Windows version and Archon were better, since it's only chess with fancy animations. Bionic Commando No big complaints here. Blaster Master Nor here. Castlevania II: Simon's Quest (U.S. release) The third worst Castlevania game in history - no plausible way of beating it without a guide, only halfway finished, the subweapons were horribly imbalanced, and most enemies and bosses were beyond stupid in design, balance and behaviour. Has no place on any Best Of-list. Double Dragon II: The Revenge Other than the lack of difficulty and annoying control issues, no complaints. Famicom Wars The What? Final Fantasy II Hampered by its levelling system. Ghouls 'n Ghosts As if. A potentially excellent game ruined by murderous difficulty, laggy gameplay and hatred for the player, even by NES standards. Gradius II (NES port) Close, but no cigar. Ice Hockey Yeah, it's good. Has nothing on Blades of Steel, though. Iron Tank Again - the what? Mega Man 2 OH GODDAMMIT~ NARC Probably only memorable because it had blood. Ninja Gaiden A pain in the ass to beat because of a certain eagle, but no complaints otherwise. P.O.W.: Prisoners of War Really mediocre in just about everything. No dice. Parodius Can't complain. THE POWER PAD with World Class Track Meet (U.S. release) Why is this here, of all things? Did it even work? R.C. Pro-Am The second one was better, but it's okay otherwise. Splatterhouse A second one that was memorable only because of the blood. Doesn't really belong on this list otherwise IMO. Super Contra (arcade version) No complaints here, actually. Super Mario Bros. 2 Yeah, it was a good one, even though it was just a graphics hack. Probably not good enough to be on this list, but meh. Super Mario Bros. 3 (Japanese release) This is a given. T&C Surf Designs The third "The What?" on this list. Track & Field II Button mashing and glitches galore. Ultima V If it's the NES version, then no. Otherwise it's a maybe. Zelda II: The Adventure of Link (U.S. release) No big complaints here, either. |
I left some games out because while I know them, I haven't really tried and thus can't comment on them. I mentioned three games because this is the first time I've heard of them - and assuming they were so good, they probably should've been more generally known.
If anything, 1988 seems like the best year of the NES - but the best ever? Have to disagree, even if Mega Man 2 is on there.
