Forums - Gaming - Top 8 most important videogame systems

Anybody whining about XBox Live needs to remember that Battle.Net has more active users and it's only compatible with 5 games.

And anybody whining about Halo making FPS mainstream doesn't remember how big Doom, GoldenEye, or Half-Life were. Doom was so huge that Bill Gates actually lived inside the game to advertise for Windows 95.

lol.. kinda boring tho

I disagree on these rankings. Mine go like this:
1. NES- first truly popular worldwide system
2. Gameboy- First handheld
3. PS1- greatly expanded the games market, and indeed changed the perception of games by the public
4. Wii- expanded the market, though it builds on the PS1's sucess
5. Atari 2600- first popular system
6. Genesis- first competitive second place console, and one that drove the competition in the 16 bit era
7. PS2- first true "media center" system that helped popularize DVD

Yeah Bill Gates is known for many things, but personality and delivery aren't those things.

1. nes - saved gaming
2. ps1/ps2
3. ps1/ps2

Actually I agree with your list. I would give #8 the Genesis/Megadrive because...well....I liked it

NES should be #1 because it introduced most of the biggest franchises ever :

Dragon Quest
Final Fantasy
Castlevania
Contra (arcade port)
Mega Man
Metal Gear (MSX port)
Ninja Gaiden (arcade port)
Street Fighter (well kind of...Street Fighter 2010) (sequel to arcade game)
Tetris (Game Boy port)

and of course Super Mario Bros. Metroid, Zelda, Kirby, Wario, Excitebike, Punch-Out! and Yoshi

Wario was from the Game Boy unless you're talking about his NES puzzle game, Punch-Out!! was an arcade game first, and Yoshi is from the SNES, unless you're talking about his NES puzzle game.

Tetris was first introduced on the NES in 1988 (TETЯIS). MSX was Japan only. And Ninja Gaiden and Contra (and also Punch-Out!!) gained popularity on the NES. Yoshi first appearance was in SMB 3 but the first self-titled Yoshi game was released on the NES in 1992. And yes I was talking about Wario's Woods on the NES.

You seem to foget that games like Contra and Street Fighter started as arcade games.

EDIT: I see that RubangB beat me to it.

2nd EDIT: the botched NES port of Metal Gear is actually a good point to be made against the NES.

I won't argue with someone who put a Sackboy as his avatar.

The console and handheld rights to Tetris were granted to Nintendo in 1989, so your date is incorrect.

Tetris was a launch title for the Game Boy in 1989, and then released on the NES.

The game was already illegally distributed on the PC and in an arcade version made by Atari.

I'd let a little confusion slide, but... have you played Super Mario Bros. 3?  There is a similar looking dinosaur in the game, but it's not playable and you can't interact with it at all, and it's not named Yoshi.

Yoshi is from Super Mario World on the SNES in 1991.

My point on xbox live was in specific terms of consoles, not pc or pc related internet gameplay. Obviously xbox was not first to enter internet play, it just made it mandatory for consoles. Now others strive to match its capabilities. That is why suggested xbox be added to the list, probably as #8.

In that case, I have 2 points, which have already been stated, so I'll summarize them:

1) DreamCast did it first.

2) If XBox Live was so important, the Wii wouldn't be dominating the 360 with friend codes.  People don't actually care.

1) Actually, SNES satelliteview was first. However, My point was the xbox made it mandatory for home consoles and everyone doesn't strive to copy Dreamcast's version, however, they do with xbox.

2) Everyone hates friendcodes, Wii isn't popular because of its online capabilities. It is popular due to specific games and motion. If the online was more like xbox live, Wii would be nearly perfect AND have many more core gamers loving it.

Every core gamer / teen I know that has switched back to 360 or hardly touches their Wii has its online as the primary reason.

1) Yeah, but I meant that the DreamCast was the first console to do it without a peripheral.  Either way, I don't really care about the "first on a console" argument, and still think the PC invented online gaming and still does it the best.

2) My point exactly.  Online capabilities don't sell systems.  They can be a deciding factor in a 360 vs. PS3 multiplat game purchasing decision, but in the long run, nobody cares enough.  If you really care about online gaming, and you prefer a console, you've already opted out of the best online gaming experience.
