I disagree on these rankings. Mine go like this:
1. NES- first truly popular worldwide system
2. Gameboy- First handheld
3. PS1- greatly expanded the games market, and indeed changed the perception of games by the public
4. Wii- expanded the market, though it builds on the PS1's sucess
5. Atari 2600- first popular system
6. Genesis- first competitive second place console, and one that drove the competition in the 16 bit era
7. PS2- first true "media center" system that helped popularize DVD
