Did the Tales of the Black Freighter make it to the movie?

Well I'm not sure what "Tales of the Black Freighter" is so unless I was stuipd and missed it, no. Is that a good or a bad thing? I've started reading the novel today so I suppose I'll come across it.

Oh yeah, you're in for a treat. I believe it'll be on the DVD.

@okr: It didn't make it to the movie, but Bernie shows up for like 1 second. Shamefully enough, they never even mention Max Shea.

How could you find Bruce Wayne boring? :P

I partially agree with you on the boring characters, I did not like Rachael at all, but apart from that they were all 'ok' to brilliant for me.

I don't know! I didn't find him boring in the least in Batman Begins, and as an actor, I never usually find Christian Bale boring. Just look at his peformances in American Psycho or The Machinist. I just didn't empathise with his character at all in TDK, and to be honest, he seemed very wooden for large parts of the fim.

Any man with eraserhead as their avatar is a trusted opinion on movies.

It's nice to know that should my arguments prove lacking, my Avatar will convince and convert people instead!

Are you a big Lynch fan or just Eraserhead?

ON TOPIC: Another (highly spurious) reason for my preference of Watchmen over TDK: When I go to the cinema I usually go on a Saturday night. Most Sunday mornings I play Squash. I don't think it can be a coincidence that the Sunday after watching TDK my squash skills were mediocre at best, but after watching Watchmen, I was so inspired suring this morning's squash I kicked *ss!

Blue Velvet is one of my favorite movies, Lost Highway, Twin Peaks, love em all. Christan Bale was amazing in The Machinist but Bruce Wayne is usually a very drab, boring, sophisticated person so there isn't much acting appeal in that role which is why he was upstaged by the Joker. Is it just me or is The Machinist somewhat David Lynchesque?

From Wiki:
"Watchmen features a story within a story in the form of Tales of the Black Freighter, a fictional comic book from which scenes appear in issues three, five, eight, nine, ten, and eleven. The fictional comic's story, "Marooned", is read by a black youth in New York City.[23] Moore and Gibbons conceived a pirate comic because they reasoned that since the characters of Watchmen experience superheroes in real life, "they probably wouldn't be at all interested in superhero comics."

This story within a story was something I haven't seen before when I first read the comic.

@Johann and okr

arrrr - that sounds great. I can see why they probably didn't feel therE was space and time in the film to fit that in though. Not to mention it probably would've added to the confusion some people felt. I'll be ordering the DVD anyway but this gives me one more reason not to feel guilty about the expense!

"Watchmen" is far better than The Dark Knight / Why does no-one own this wonderful game: Fragile Allegiance? / Speak (Type) Italian to me!

The comic was really a sensation in the 80s and the story within a story blew me away back then.

I have to read Watchmen again now (though my issue smells a bit strange today...).

EDIT: First weekend US boxoffice: $ 55.6 million.

-Well that's entirely in keeping with some of the characters!

Is that a good amount for a first weekend for this type of film? I don't really know much about about US box office numbers (or any for that natter)

Yeah Lynch is an amazing director. I loved Blue Velvet, but my favourites have to be Twin Peaks, Lost Highway and Dune Having said that I've not finished watching Twin Peaks yet because I've only recently managed to find the second series available to buy.

I'd definitely agree re The Machinist. I wonder if Crhistian Bale and Lynch will ever work together (I doubt it!) I also wonder how a Lynch directed Watchmen would've turned out.

I love Twin Peaks, Blue Velvet and Dune, but one of my favorite Lynch movies is his most unusal one, which is rarely mentioned in discussions about him: The Straight Story.

Regarding US box office debuts, here you can compare Watchmen's $55 mio. to other 50+ weekend debuts: http://www.boxofficeguru.com/open50+.htm

Ok so a quick scan suggestes eventual takings of 136K-260k if it performs like those films. I suppose it depends on the reviews and word of mouth - the 2 reviews I've seen so far are 2/5 and 4/5 so I haven't got much to go on yet.

You're the first person I've seen for ages to admit to liking Dune. Do you like the book as well and how good an adaptation do you think it is of the book?

I've got The Stright Story but I'm ashamed to say I've never watched it. My friends tell me it's good but it just looks, well, boring It's definitely worth watching then is it?!

NOPE!

The ending to the Watchmen worked. I give the film thumbs up. But NO WAY is it a better movie than The Dark Knight. Good superhero film, but no way better than TDK. Watchmen battles "The Incredibles" though as one of the best costumed action hero films, but TDK is superior.

Since you liked them both, what, in your opinion made TDK a better film?

Ha, what a coincidence: You own The Straight Story and never watched it and I own the Dune books and never read them (too lazy). Yes, I would certainly say The Straight Story is worth watching, but I can also understand that many fans of the typical Lynch style find this one boring. I loved the movie and Angelo Badalamenti's score for it.

A bit more on topic: TDK had a $158 mio debut weekend, Watchmen $55 mio. I don't know what Warner Bros. expected, but I think it's settled now that the movie won't be a flop. My guess: $170-200 mio lifetime US boxoffice.
