Nasa's planet-hunting telescope, Kepler, has rocketed into space on a historic voyage to track down other Earths in a faraway patch of the Milky Way.
It is the first mission capable of answering the age-old question: Are other worlds like ours out there?
Kepler, named after the German 17th-century astrophysicist, set off on its unprecedented mission from Cape Canaveral, Florida, thundering into a clear sky embellished by a waxing moon.
"It was just magnificent. It looked like a star was being formed in the sky," said Bill Borucki, Kepler's principal scientist.
"Everybody was delighted, everybody was screaming, 'Go Kepler!'"
Kepler's mission will last at least three and a half years and cost £428 million.
The goal is to find, if they exist, Earth-like planets circling stars in the so-called habitable zone - orbits where liquid water could be present on the surface of the planets.
That would mean there were lots of places out there for life to evolve, Borucki said.
On the other hand, "if we don't find any, it really means Earths are very rare, we might be the only extant life and, in fact, that will be the end of 'Star Trek'."
Once it is settled into an Earth-trailing orbit around the sun, Kepler will stare non-stop at 100,000 stars near the Cygnus and Lyra constellations, between 600 and 3,000 light years away. The telescope will watch for any dimming, or winks, in the stellar brightness that might be caused by orbiting planets.

Didn't they find some planets with water and vegetation on already ? I believe I read about it a while back, planet simply being extremely far away. In either case it's pretty interesting.

Yeah, scientists have been analysing planets using the transit method for detecting exoplanets since the 1990's. I think gravitational lensing is a good method too and I have heard some interesting stuff about polarimetry, I would like to see that applied to more than one planet.

At the end of OP I know they have not found a planet with vegetation. You are either thinking of two things...

1. Gliese 581 C/D - people like to get excited about these planets as they are in the 'Goldilocks' zone. People (read sensationalist newspapers) claim they may support life such as vegetation. But the truth is they are just empty desolate planets that have no chance of supporting life.

2. Europa - Europa is a moon of Jupiter it is a ball of ice, but it is believed that the constant gravitational pull creates so much energy that the core is water. Scientists like to believe that life could exist there, but no evidence exists.

I never quite understood why the conclusion. We don't have anything aside from the Earth to decide on what's needed for life and whether it's possible without those conditions in a completely different form. It's like usually having aliens in books and films in a humanoid shape... could be totally different.

exacly. It's very vague simply basing life upon the conditions that we need. Again it's all they really can do so far. After all scientists only relies on what they know and obtaining new knowledge based on the current.
