No, this is all right, they can't enjoy victory if they don't.

Of course they could have... it's not like the whole company is in financial dire straits or anything like that.

They were fine at the start of this gen...

If it's bundled it will. It worked for MGS4 and Motorstorm (especially Motorstorm). PS3 games sell much better when they are bundled.
Should you have waited until this gen was over before creating this thread?

Let me correct your statements. 1. Well, I guess Sony was in a "horrid" economic state when they were selling the PS1, PS2, and PSP at a loss, right? 2. So it's not about the games, but it's about attracting developers? Well, answer me this: What do developers do? In fact, I'll save you the trouble. They make games. So it's not just about the games, but getting companies that make games. Hrmm. Why do you write this again? 3. Apparently you don't understand the market. Right now, Microsoft is in dire straits as well. The economy is affecting everyone and they've even been forced to make layoffs. And yet they still pay for Xbox Live servers, developer support, game development, etc. Microsoft may be wealthy, but by your standards, $50 million would mean a lot to them as well. It's not like it's an insignificant amount of money. Rather, it's something that either company easily could have paid if they wanted to. I'm not going to respond to the bajillion other people who quoted me because I just don't care and at this point, you're just flattering me. I know I'm amazing and controversial, but I just don't feel the same way about the rest of you.

1- Did Sony sell PS1/2/P at as big a loss as they did with the PS3? It certainly doesn't seem to be the case, especially after they cut the price by 200 € in Europe (before the PS3 had even seen its first holiday season).
3- Microsoft is not in dire straits. Unless I really don't understand the definition of dire straits.

There comes a point when you can say, OK, this side is going to win in just about any contest. True, it can always turn around but the odds are pretty against you.
Even if the PS3 consistently started outselling the 360 by 50k per month every month, it would take over three years for the PS3 to overtake the 360. In 2012 the 360 will be seven years old and by that time, we will already be really close to a new Xbox if a new one isn't already out.
Even if the PS3 started outselling the 360 by 100k per month it would still take more than a year and a half for the PS3 to overtake the 360 and I wouldn't even be surprised if we started seriously talking about the next Xbox by then.
There are some things that are hard to call before they're over, but 1st, 2nd, and 3rd are already pretty much decided for this gen and denying that just shows what kind of fanboy you are.
Now saying all that, 3rd place doesn't mean the console is a failure. The PS3 has done a brilliant job getting out the hole that Sony dug itself into and is by no means a failure.
| MontanaHatchet said: 1. Sony sold their console at an even bigger loss. Companies have been doing this with consoles for quite a while now. 2. If RPGs were so significant, wouldn't they be the highest selling genre this generation? Microsoft just wanted to gain a bigger fanbase in Japan, that's it. The main fanbase of the Playstation consoles is the casual fanbase, and Nintendo snagged them, not Microsoft. 3. Sony did this too with the Playstation, and they could have done it this generation if they wanted to. If Sony wanted to buy downloadable content for 50 million dollars, they could have. They're a global corporation. That's not even that much to them. |
Yes, but it's hard to deny that Microsoft defeated Sony this generation, or more accurately, Sony defeated themselves. They are certainly far beyond the point of winning anything, while Microsoft easily can chalk up this generation as a grand success.
Sony's fumble came in the form of the Blu-Ray player. They risked the success of their gaming division so they could promote what they hoped would be a much more profitable division in the future, movies and other BR related media.
As for the rpg statement, the highest selling games of every gen are always preordained. However, most of the core Sony fans, I imagine the ones like myself who switched to the Xbox 360, always cherished their jrps that were only available on the Sony consoles. Sure, it's anecdotal, but it is also a commonly held belief. Sony dropped the ball with jrpgs this gen, and their fanbase chided them for it, if nothing else. I hope to hell Killzone 2 was worth it.
As for me, I don't know anyone who would trade Dragoon 2 for a few hours of a derivitive FPS with an online mode and pretty graphics. Then again, I hang around gamers, not fanboys.
I don't need your console war.

You're power hungry, spinnin' stories, and bein' graphics whores.
