There comes a point when you can say, OK, this side is going to win in just about any contest. True, it can always turn around but the odds are pretty against you.
Even if the PS3 consistently started outselling the 360 by 50k per month every month, it would take over three years for the PS3 to overtake the 360. In 2012 the 360 will be seven years old and by that time, we will already be really close to a new Xbox if a new one isn't already out.
Even if the PS3 started outselling the 360 by 100k per month it would still take more than a year and a half for the PS3 to overtake the 360 and I wouldn't even be surprised if we started seriously talking about the next Xbox by then.
There are some things that are hard to call before they're over, but 1st, 2nd, and 3rd are already pretty much decided for this gen and denying that just shows what kind of fanboy you are.
Now saying all that, 3rd place doesn't mean the console is a failure. The PS3 has done a brilliant job getting out the hole that Sony dug itself into and is by no means a failure.
