Forums - Gaming - Should Sony leave hardware biz and become only publisher?

I don't know, Sir Howard Stringer is pushing Sony in a more software-oriented direction, but i doubt we'll see his vision come to pass very quickly. They have certainly already done quite a bit of work on PS4. Unless they feel the market will be wholly hostile to it, they'll release it to recoup R&D

Sony is here to stay for at least one more generation, but the nature of the company is changing, so nothing is certain in the long-term

Most of sonys exclusive games are 2nd party, they don't have a strong enough 1st party game library to survive............ afterall, they aint Nintendo, EA, Capcom, Konami, Sega ect...... They simply don't have enough franchises.

God of war
Syphon filter and......... erm, erm........... ermmmmmmmmmmmm

Ronster....you cannot argue with Sony's 1st party support. No offense man.

Sony could become quiet a profitable 3rd party publisher. But I dont think that's what they want.

Sony never intentionally got into the gaming industry to make videogames. They made it to control formats. Kutaragi was the only one who was interested in a videogame system, while the major shareholders wanted something else.

Maybe they should, but I don't think they will (not in this generation at least). It's more likely they go bankrupt (or get bailed out) than they do that.

Sony is too slow to make decisions, and they have a lot of pride. That's what will bite them in the ass.

yes..sony should leave. There is nothing that makes me more sick than a sony fanboys. no play station, no sony fanboys.

Yea, so a massive multinational corporation who brought gaming to the masses, basically revolutionized it and have made tons of quality games should leave because it has a few vocal fans?

And even if Sony did quit making hardware, you'd still get Sony fanboys because of their software

Ya but the Sony fanboys would have to either swallow their pride, admit ownage, and buy MS or Nintendo.......or quit gaming.

Thats the dream.

This is a stupid topic question really. Nintendo and Microsoft are the only companies that would publish games if they gave up hardware. Games aren't first priority for Sony all. It's console first for them.

No way that all I gotta say.

Sony is failing hard, and it is going to happen no matter what sony fanyboys may think.

Quit hating on MS for doing things the way Sony SHOULD have done them in the first place.

If things were different and MS was leaving you wouldn't see me crying about it in a forum and telling everyone that "Sony sux and blah blah".

They shouldn't, all they need is a good PS4 and they will be back on top, but if they did they would knock out EA/Activision/Ubisoft as the biggest publishers.

Games like Ratchet & Clank, Killzone, God of War, Gran Turismo on multiple consoles would sell amazingly.

Those games just like GTA IV  and soon RE5 and FFXIII will sell better on XBox 360 than PS3.  If only they were multi-platform the sales would be enormous and huge profits for developers securing their futures in game business.

Right.  Japan says Hi.

This. I bet you all my VG$ that FF13 sells 1 million in Japan on PS3.

With the decline of the PS2 and low software sales on the PSP and slow PS3 sales the Sony publishing empire is a shadow of its former self. I say they ought to ditch the worst 1/3rd or 1/4 of their developers to cut costs.
