Forums - Sales - Why it seems nothing can beat Wii/Ds despite great games/price cuts?

well, one answer to your question is that Nintendo has a long history of doing what they are doing now going back to the days of the nes. it wasn't the most powerful system, it didn't have all of the best games, but it totally dominated the market. strangely enough when Nintendo has had some of their most powerful consoles and best games they have had harder times selling. the price was another part of it. the tickle me elmo effect. where some toy becomes scarce and sells many times its retail value at Christmas is another part. the 360 had that in 2005, and it's just my opinion, but i think Nintendo saw that and used it to their advantage in '06 and somehow carried it over in 07 and 08. some things i find unexplainable like the line at e3 2006 to play the wii, maybe changing the name generated curiosity. a mixture of shrewd business strategy, opportunism, and zeitgeist. i tried to answer your question.

I stopped reading this post when I got to this blatant lie.

The Wii has the most versatile controller, and can do the most things.  Versatility in controls makes room for a the most diverse gaming library.  The most diverse gaming library is able to make the largest and most diverse group of people happy.  It's not confusing.  It's not due to shortages at all.  If it's that easy to sell something that isn't fun, don't you think Sony or Microsoft would be doing it too?

They tried.

lolz at the wii software attach ratio. For a console that selling gangbusters, their attach ratio is poor compared to it's competition and their hardware install base.

This gives me a new thread idea: responses to all the tired, old Wii-bashing arguments. That way, we could all just cut-n-paste replies to the same old posts...But until then I'll settle for bullet points.

-Console owners' tastes tend to diversify as the install base increases: they don't all buy the same stuff.

-Attach ratios are a stupid metric, as they make poor-selling consoles look great and high-selling consoles look poor.

-For example, by your logic the Gamecube is the best console of last generation for moving software, with the PS2 being far and away the worst. Sound about right to you?

-I'm leaving now, but will be happy to address your response tomorrow.

Wii games are better so we don't need as many of them to have fun.

You don't need a diverse controller to play the best genre of games. Matter of fact if you're playing turn based 80 hour long story driven jrpgs I don't think the controller matters at all.

Heavens to Murgatoids.

I thought it was concluded that N intendo rebuys all their product from retail at a loss skewing the hardware numbers creating a relativity in demand generating huge sums of profit from distributer preoders.

I'm Unamerica and you can too.

With Wii's IR pointing letting you just point and click through menus, that could turn an 80 hour JRPG into a 78 hour JRPG.

But for a better example, neither the PS3 nor the 360 nor the PS2 can handle Wii Play because they don't have IR pointers on their controllers.  That's a really popular game, and while you may think people only buy it for the remote, the Nintendo Channel's usage stats say that people are STILL playing that game.  A lot.  So yes, it's a very popular game that has sold over 10 million that is only possible with a Wii remote.

So you can port HD games down to Wii by hurting the graphics, but you can't port Wii games down to the HD systems by hurting the controls.  They tried that with Rayman Raving Rabbids on the 360.  Huge flop.  The game was completely based on motion controls.  Without them, the game was nothing.

So I'd say that yes, the controller does allow for a more diverse game lineup.

yeah, but I don't see why sony or ms don't put IR pointers on their controllers if they are such a big deal. Seems like it would be simple enough. I bought a plug and play keyboard and wireless mouse for one of my computers.
