You don't need a diverse controller to play the best genre of games. Matter of fact if you're playing turn based 80 hour long story driven jrpgs I don't think the controller matters at all.

With Wii's IR pointing letting you just point and click through menus, that could turn an 80 hour JRPG into a 78 hour JRPG.

But for a better example, neither the PS3 nor the 360 nor the PS2 can handle Wii Play because they don't have IR pointers on their controllers.  That's a really popular game, and while you may think people only buy it for the remote, the Nintendo Channel's usage stats say that people are STILL playing that game.  A lot.  So yes, it's a very popular game that has sold over 10 million that is only possible with a Wii remote.

So you can port HD games down to Wii by hurting the graphics, but you can't port Wii games down to the HD systems by hurting the controls.  They tried that with Rayman Raving Rabbids on the 360.  Huge flop.  The game was completely based on motion controls.  Without them, the game was nothing.

So I'd say that yes, the controller does allow for a more diverse game lineup.
