Forums - PC - I just played Cave Story for the first time. Wow!

I've read small homages to Cave Story here and there, mainly in gaming magazines. They've always praised the game and I've always thought 'So what?'.

Now, I had some free time on my hands, and I decided to try it. Wowsers! I have not played very many 2D shooter/adventure to match it. It doesn't reach the awesome level of Super Metroid, in fact it falls considerably short when compared to that masterpiece, but it beats just about everything else in the genre that I've played.

The level design is way above normal, and the weapons are some of the best I've ever used, and the upgrade system is almost genius. The sound is really good, the music is also above par, the story is actually very well laid out and the character design works very well. My main gripe is with the platforming elements. Jumping is not quite fun, and sometimes you die a bit too often. Thank god for save points.

Anyway, since this game is free, I would recommend it to anyone who ever enjoyed playing games on the NES or SNES, and that enjoys Metroid style games.

(Those are just the three top hits on Google)

So what did those of you who already played it think?

I played pretty far into it before the english translation came out and had a real good time. Now I'm waiting for the WiiWare release so I can play this game with a good D-pad like it deserves and throw the creator some well-earned cash.

The Bubble Gun is amazing, but it's not amazing on its own. It's in combination with the other weapons that its unique ablilities really starts to shine. I don't think I've ever played a game of this style where the choice of weapon was as critical, and where you are constantly changing weapons to deal with the next enemy.

Is this the game someone said was brutally hard sometime ago?

I really hope not--it seemed frightfully easy to me. (And here's where I get flamed: and vastly overrated...but it's just fine as a nice, free (this is the key: free) time-waster.)

Wait until you get to the Sacred Ground (Hell). Assuming you do, that is. Like Mega Man 9 it's not impossible, but it offers a brisk challenge.
