Let's turn the clock-back shall we?
Imagine, it's november 2003. Nintendo announces that they will release a new console system for 2004. That it will also depart from the existing Nintendo consoles, the Gameboy Advance and Gamecube.It won't be a successor to either of these consoles. What does this mean? You know very little about nintendo's plan. But now you have the news that Nintendo isn't going to make a successor to the Gamecube or the Gameboy? Does this mean the Gameboy Brand is over?
Now, a few months later in Janurary. Yahoo reports that Nintendo announces a few details about this mystery project. Project "Nintendo DS". One of the few details announced is that the mystery device shall include 2 screens. Iwata tells us that Nintendo is designing the "Nintendo DS" for a complete different experience for gaming in the 21st century.
May Arrives, and with it. E3 2004. Nintendo is proud too announce the Nintendo DS with all the features announced for the console. Gamers were both shocked, amazed, and maybe a few were appauled with the notions that Nintendo DS brought forth. Now that is was widely known to the general public.
Let's fast forward a bit to Janurary 2005. A short bit after the Nintendo DS launch. Aimed for the Holidays of 2004. The Nintendo DS has shipped 2.4 million reportedly, hundreds of thousands more than what Nintendo projected. The future of this new handheld console looked promising.
Now, 4 years later. In March 2009, we approuch a new milestone in this consoles life. 99.36 million units sold, Nintendo DS stands less than 700, 000 units away from 100 million. When will it achieve this goal? My guess is in the week of March 15th to 21st.
Nintendo DS broke many records and helped touch-screen technology become mainstream. So I salute you Nintendo, You've successfully done it, the Nintendo DS has helped reshape how we think gaming. 1 person at a time, all 99, 360, 000 of us.
