Forums - PC Discussion - Installed Linux on my laptop - impressions

Hi all!

Yesterday i got tired of Windows for the last time!
I mean, i do a clean install every month and i don't understand
why do windows "slow down" so much after some time....
I click on Firefox and wait like 2 minutes for fu....g browser to open...

So, my friend is using Ubuntu for some time and has been praying the
system ever since he installed it.

I have to agree... I'm so astonished by it i decided to post my happines and share
it with you all.....

Install was super fast, everything configured right out of the box.......
I just installed my wireless and printer and that was easy, just typed
a few commands and voila.........

For every program i used under Windows i found a equally good or better
substitude under Linux and all for free of charge....

And people in Linux community are more than happy to help if a newbie
doesn't know how to get started!

All in all 9.5/10.... YEA.... LINUX ROCKS!

I have an Atheros AR 5008 as wireless card and unfortunately Linux doesn't know what that is...

I am waiting a linux OS that suports it...

Did u look in Linux forums for a driver....?
Because my wireless didn't work, so i downloaded
a custom module that works and after modeprobing it
Ubuntu detected my wireless no prob!

I have Ubuntu on one of my computers. Fun to play around with but I don't use it regularly. Not great for gaming though.

I am a Gauntlet Adventurer.

I strive to improve my living conditions by hoarding gold, food, and sometimes keys and potions. I love adventure, fighting, and particularly winning - especially when there's a prize at stake. I occasionally get lost inside buildings and can't find the exit. I need food badly. What Video Game Character Are You?

I like linux for development, but in mind Windows is still the only OS for gaming. Strange that you had to format every month, I tend to find Windows doesn't get too overblown and require a format until about 2 years in.

Just out of curiosity, what hardware do you have and what version of windows were you trying to run?

Yeah I did. My wireless card is the black sheep among all others :(

My laptop specs:

1.6Ghz Centrino
512Mb of RAM
80Gb HDD
Wifi, mic, cam...

-----------------------------

I used Windows XP before i installed Ubuntu..

On my gaming desktop PC i use Windows 7, not Vista
because it's utter shit!
But i don't play a lot on PC, mostly PS3, PS2...

Hrm, I'd say that machine is a little underpowered for XP, which might of been your issue. Mind you I've seen plenty of people try and run XP with half the ram and a 1ghz processor. Either way, I'm glad that Linux is at least working out for you.

What? To slow...? You gave me a good laugh!

Do u even know on what systems did Micro$soft sell WinXP
when it first came out! They were much lower than mine...

In fact, minimum Windows XP system requirements are:

- 300 Mhz processor (mine 1600Mhz!?!)
- 128 Mb of RAM (mine 512Mb)
- Super VGA 800x600 GFX (trust me, i beat this like 100%)

Everything mentioned above and my Windows XP should work like crazy!
