I've never seen a pop-in ad in my life, and I don't have any ad-blockers, or anything.

Me too, well atleast on this site.

Perhaps the ads are regional, as we're both from the UK.

a few things that will hopefully help people

1) ads are regional. If you see a problem with an ad let brett know. He does care about this website, and will address the issue, however since they are regional you may see ads he doesn't. If your anti-virus software pops up a warning about a virus, look through all the ads (hopefully you only have 1 tab open, or know exactly which tab the virus warning came from) and report what ads are present and where on the page. Include where you are from, and all the information you can, including any pages you get redirected too, or names of viruses.

2) I highly suggest that if you are using FF to download the plug-in no-script, and then just click "allow scripts globally" this will prevent any cross site scripts (XSS) which is where 90% of the viruses/trojans you see on the internet come from, especially on legitimate sites like this one, while maintaining normal browsing capabilities. If you are a more advance user, than you can select individual scripts you want to allow and all that other good stuff. This is useful for both viewing this website, and any other website, as google ads (along with other ad companies) are both popular on websites, and commonly hijacked to install trojans.

If you drop a PS3 right on top of a Wii, it would definitely defeat it. Not so sure about the Xbox360. - mancandy

Contact Brett directly if you have a problem with ads not displaying correctly (or popping up too often) and of course any problems with virus/trojan warnings. Make sure to include which ad it was (or which host it was trying to load from) and its location in the page. The forum isn't really the appropriate place to discuss this.
