Ah, a mention of Test Drive.

How I loved Test Drive Unlimited for the X360. One of the most underrated games in the library. Will we ever get another open-world racer that is THAT massive, and based on real-world data? I know there's a new one coming out that's offroad, which looks great, but after playing TDU, I clamor for a big, open-world racer again. I love that about NFS:MW, as well.

Hmmm you have peaked my interest sir

I have to be honest, i have not actually looked into that game...i will have to give it a try

If you can find a copy, it should be rather cheap. The game debuted at $39.99 in 2006, which was a fantastic value for what it is.

What made the game so great was the fact that it used an actual real-world model of Hawaii's island of Oahu. Although some of the roads vary from the real life version, the fact is the entire island is to scale.

The coolest thing is the around-the-island race. You must complete the highway that encircles the entire island - over 120 miles to scale. Took me around 45 minutes to do it. It was incredibly fun.

The game isn't perfect, but I'd say that it's quite fun for an arcade-style racer. Good graphics, lots of cars (125), and so on. Not many car modifications like an NFS or GT/Forza game, but it's still quite fun for a value buy.

OMG i did want to get this game when it came out...but i totally forgot about it! TY! prolly will get it this weekend

there abandoning everything that made NFS series great >_<...its becoming another PGR or GT driving sim....i do not approve >:(

This. How come everything has to be about graphics in driving games now? Sure, pretty cars sell. But I think innovative gameplay should sell more.

Problem is the majority of racing fans want realism, thats why GT and Forza sell millions more than their closest rivals.

Sure, Racing fans may like realism. But Mario Kart Wii says otherwise. I can't see why developers can't balance innovation with realism. It seems to be one extreme, or the other.

I agree. I love Mario Kart (although recent playthrough of the wii version has me wanting to now kill Shigeru Miyamoto, the wii version is a big F**k you to all Mario Kart fans). But also I love Racers. It's the in between games that I never ever like. NFS at least for me has always been meh. The only game that has done suedo realism with huge chunks of arcade right is Grid.

Grid is possibly my fave racing game this gen. It was brilliant. Hopefully Shift is Grid on steroids.

Sorry bout Mario Kart Wii input here. I can absolutely say that Mario Kart Wii is not Mario Kart at all.

I agree wiht your opinion on MK. At least Brawl is smash bros. More like the original than melee imo, but has a nice mix of both.

Y'know these are bull-shots right? I assume it'll look good, but let's wait til a little later when we see real screens.

So interesting is the evolution of gaming!

I miss the days when racing games were all about having interesting track layouts and being fun to play. Now they're hampering basic gameplay mechanics to show off "realistic" visuals that quite frankly fall headlong into the Uncanny Valley.

This is why my most-played racing games are Mario Kart Wii, F-Zero GX, and Burnout 3: Takedown.

I've heard that Gripshift on PSP is another good one for a racing game that's more about the gameplay than the visuals.  Never tried it myself, but from what I've seen, it looks fun.

Sky Render - Sanity is for the weak.

Definitely see if you can track it down.  I am glad I own it (I picked it up for $40 when it first came out), but never got into it.  I wouldn't trade it in at all.  It is a keeper for me.  There are complaints the cars feel a bit too light weight though, but I didn't find an issue.  It does offer you a large degree of Oahu, so if you want a game where you can just drive about, this is it..  It definitely is one that flies under the radar.  Still looks good today actually.

The original Test Drive (8 bit computers and IBM) was intended as a driving sim, as was the original Need for Speed.

By the way, back to the original post, do need to see if these photos will reflect in actual gameplay.  They do look excellent though.  BUT, need to keep one's eyes open on it, to see if it pans out.  Have they even released any video of the game in action?

By the way, regarding Shift had worked for SimBin:

Didnt they learn not to do this with Need For Speed : Pro Street?

why not go back and make another Need for Speed Hot Persuit? true Racing fans would love realism , but Need for speed fans love Cops and Robbers with insane actions i used to be fan myself , and Hot Persuit 2 is my favorite along with most wanted, not Underground nor Pro Street.

Does EA have an entry in the driving sim arena?  If not, why not stick Shift in there?  Does EA have to abide by some rule that say they are allowed only ONE driving game with "Need for Speed" on the cover?
