Forums - Nintendo - IGN Reviews Sonic & the Black Knight (Ruh Roh!)

Did anyone notice that he said that one of the positives about the game was the varied level designs?

Did anyone notice that one of the negatives about the game was the terrible level designs?

Did anyone notice?

It's right there in the scoring.

So the review is inconsistent in too many things, and even factually wrong in some parts.

That is simply a bad review. He's entitled to his opinion, but not when it comes at the expense of actually noting what's in the game.

A flashy-first game is awesome when it comes out. A great-first game is awesome forever.

Well, yeah that review was terrible actually. Hopefully i'll post my impressions soon, can't get my Wii to read the game o.O

"To be fair, he was complaining that the swordplay is nothing more than a basic motion control. He said that it doesn't even register horizontal & verticle swipes, it's just basic wiimote movement."

But is this a combat heavy game? If so, that would make more sense. But wouldn't complex controls slow this game down even more, when he complained the combat removed the speed from the game? Seems he's not consistent with what he wants this game to have been.

Perhaps he is complaining because the game took out Sonic's speed without putting in an interesting combat mechanism to make up for it.  He'd be happier if the game was as slow as it is right now and the fighting better, or if the game was faster and the fighting as basic as it is right now, but instead it hit the sweet spot of suck.

...

IGN claims the waggle is pointless and detracts from the game but they gave Onechanbara which is a complete wagglefest where you could almost go through the entire game with your eyes closed just waggling like an epileptic monkey a 6.9.

Why? Because you can do vertical strokes in Onechanbara?? Like it makes a difference...

I'm finding IGN has started given anything remotely 'core' an overly high score - they are amongst the most generous for Tenchu, Deadly Creatures, Onechanbara but overly (and often stupidly) critical of more 'casual' titles.

Oh my god talk about unresponsive motion controls.

Sorry but from the first couple of stages i would give it a 6 at best. And i'm being generous.

I don't think IGN was alone.

I'm not saying the complaint isn't valid - by why is it only valid here and not on Onechanbara?

Nor am I suggest SaTBK is a great game, I havn't played it but I'm sure it's better than a 3.9.   I'm sure the production values are way above Onechanbara's too yet that gets a 6.9 and Sonic a 3.9??  Please.

Nor is this the only review where their bias is showing.  If you look at their We Ski and Snowboard review you'll see it's really shallow to downright stupid and all the commentors take them to task for it.  Which is saying something when the game is We Ski...

Lol ... just lol!

Sonic & the Black Knight is a disappointing mess of presentational highs and design lows. The game will wow with its crisp cinemas, slick interface, online functionality and pretty in-game graphics, but when you sit down to play it, you will quickly discover a slow, clunky, boring affair ruined by stupid design choices. The intense speed, loop-de- loops, and pinball jumps that Sonic is known for have been altogether removed for insultingly bad swordplay tied to retarded Wii waggle that will leave your arm sore and your heart broken. There isn't a level in Black Knight that is even one tenth as compelling as a single daylight mission in Sonic Unleashed.

This is a Sonic game that craps all over everything that has ever made the series interesting and then adds pointless waggle.

Rating Description
out of 10
8.5 Presentation
Slick interface, crisp cut-scenes, online trading system and leader boards. In-game graphics look good. Dialog is too campy.
8.5 Graphics
Really pretty. Varied level designs come to life with good art and great effects.
7.5 Sound
There's a lot of voice work and music and a good chunk of it is over-the-top campy.
3.0 Gameplay
Possibly designed by monkeys. Everything you've ever liked about Sonic games -- speed, great level designs -- is gone. Instead, you will crawl through stages and fight enemy after enemy, with waggle.
3.0 Lasting Appeal
You can beat the primary single-player mode in a few hours and then you'll unlock some extra playable characters. But there's no point in going back unless you like torturing yourself.

3.9
Bad

OVERALL
(out of 10 / not an average)

Wow, I never would have thought it would come down to a 3.9. With Nintendo Power's 8.0 and now this... Ah well. I'll definitely be playing my fair share of this game in the coming days. And I'll let you guys know what I think. Still, bummer.

take out Sonic & the Black Knight and put there any ps360 game and nothing will change, but cause it's a wii game it gets bashing. and Lasting Appeal coment is just laughable - Heavenly Sword, Bourne Supremacy or any other hd action game, anyone?
