I see what you did there. You ignored the face that the order is

Wii>360>PS2>PS3 and tried to present it as a positive for Sony

gebx is a sony fanboy, confirmed.

I'm not trying to say that, it just seems odd to have that in the title when

Wii+DS is most likely > PS 2/3/P

Not most likely, it is. 22% vs 20% of revenue for the 2008 fiscal years.

This info as already been posted weeks ago, when the financial report came out.

Yeah, WoW is a serious cashcow. Imagine having 10m people paying you $100 each a year...

The only real competitor I can imagine to WoW would be a Pokemon MMORPG (and its a different demographic, so they can co-exist).

It would be interesting to see profits though - WoW would cost a metric-shitload to operate...

I think people grossly overestimate the potential of a Pokemon MMO. Even if it is a big franchise, there are two things going against it - the pay to play model (requires parents to pay monthly), and its appeal for home consoles/PC. We know how big the Final Fantasy franchise is, yet it only managed ~500k. On the other hand, WoW's subscriptions are pretty damn close to Pokemon Diamond / Pearl sales.

Anyway, WoW's revenue got even more ridiculous thanks to WotLK. I wonder when the damn thing will start declining, it's been over 4 years. Everyone I know that quit got back into it thanks to the expansion, I'm being pressured to do the same...

you meant "overestimate" right? Otherwise, your post isn't congruent at all.

Ah, of course, thanks.

Edited.

There is a difference between service and product, just as there is a difference between sales an robbery.

Those 99 millions $ of PC sales do not include the WOW box sales actually, those are in the MMORPG section.
The reason being that WOW expansion sold over 3 million copies at 50$ each last quarter so it can not be included into that.
So PC sales have to be sales of others games like CoD, Diablo2 battlechest, starcraft battlechest.
Heck when Diablo 3 was announced last summer Diablo 2 battlechest climbed to the top 5 pc sales shortly there after for a few weeks.

Actually, this was net revenue (profit) not gross revenue. And the article said that the PC sales were included in there -- I would guess because maybe that information was gotten out of the financial report document (but of course, this is Kotaku, so one can never be sure).

I still maintain what I say, and the article seems like extrapolated from the financial not some information obtained directly from Activision.

There is no way  3 million copies of WOTLK ( that's first week sales by the way, sales till end of december were probably in the 4 millions range)+ regular Wow copies ( which still charts well on PC sales) + whatever D2, Starcraft, GH3, CoD4 and co amount to 99 million $

Another reason I say this is Blizzard has stated their revenue on Wow is around 10$ per account ( more in US/Europe, less in China), multiply by 11 millions subscribers, multiply by 12 months and that is already over the MMORPG revenue, remove cost of sales ( mainly in China where it is operated by a third party) and that seems to be around the net revenue listed for MMORPG..

PS3-Xbox360 gap : 1.5 millions and going up in PS3 favor !

PS3-Wii gap : 20 millions and going down !

He just lumped the two playstation consoles together, hence the "PS" in the thread title.

True.

But also a really odd decision.

Like, really really odd decision.

Like, "where the hell did that come from?" odd decision.

Like "and then she woke up and realized this entire season was just a dream" odd.

He's been reading too much SDF...;P

How is it an odd decision? If we had DS numbers seperate you would be complaining that Wii and DS weren't lumped together. Sony has 2 supported consoles, I see no reason why their revenue being lumped together in this thread is a big deal.

Actually, it's 11 million people paying you (15x12) $180 a year, or $1,980,000,000 a year. Although some people don't pay every month, some joined later in the year, but it still seems a bit low, since at least 2 million people bought WoW this year.

Either an innocent mistake or he's just poking fun at the playstation family PR talk.

Knowing gebx, most likely the second 8D

Yep I think too that the reach of a Pokemon MMO is vastly overestimated.

There's a lot more to an MMO than the IP/franchise behind it, if there wasn't Star Wars Galaxy would be the biggest MMO by now and it sure isn't.

I tend to believe that Wow success is actually due to attracting a lot of casual older folks ( by older I mean 27+) which tend to play less games and as a result tend to switch games less often, this is I belive the crowd that is the most stable in Wow and for which Blizzard actually has the least workd to do to keep it happy.

The younger the gamer the more likely ( in my belief) he tends to tries new games and the more difficult it is to keep him over long period of times ( of course there are exceptions, I have someone at work with a 16 year old son that is an arena freak and Wow is pretty much the only game he plays).

Otherwise Wow is successfull because it offers activities to a wide varieties of gamers, it is very polished, and relatively speaking it is very cheap ( 1 expansion every 18 months and in between a lot of free content is getting pushed through).

Heck with WOTLK if you are an achievement freak it will take you longer to get 90% of Wow achievements than to plat 10 PS3 or Xbox360 games...

No, I wouldn't, because I know full well that they're two separate systems. Do you think companies make their analysis based on how their games did on a "Sony machine" or a "Nintendo machine," or do they do so based on how they did on a PS2 versus a PS3/ a Wii vs. a DS?

It makes no sense, dude. It's not a big deal either, mind you, and I mostly commented on it because it amused me, but let's not kid ourselves: separate systems shouldn't be lumped together.

this is impossible, 3rd parties can't sell on Wii
