Forums - Sales - Activision Revenue for 2008 - MMORPG #1, PS #2, Wii #3

http://kotaku.com/5161882/so-which-console-is-buttering-activisions-bread

Yup, more fun numbers from Activision's annual report, released earlier today. In this case, we see which console (or consoles) are buttering Activision's bread.

And the winner? Not a console at all. Like we already covered earlier tonight, Blizzard's revenue from combined World of Warcraft subscriptions and boxed sales (the "99" figure being almost entirely made up of WoW, Burning Crusade and Lich King sales) is a mighty figure, in this case eclipsing Activision's entire console revenue combined (the discrepancy between this figure and the total revenue shown earlier tonight down to Activision's greater losses for stuff like marketing and development).

As far as Activision go on the console side of things, you can see the Wii out in front, closely followed by the 360, with both Sony consoles bringing up the rear. Interestingly, like we've seen from many other publishers lately, they're not breaking handheld sales down into DS v PSP numbers. Presumably as a courtesy to Sony.

NOTE - the chart on the left lists numbers in millions. So it's not a net revenue of $1,152, it's a net revenue of $1.15 billion.

Anyone else surprised by 1) low sales of PC games and 2) PS2 making more revenue then PS3 ??

You should provide a link to the source you copied this from, if only so I can laugh at them for lumping PS2 and PS3 together. (Edit: Kotaku... lawl)

And no, PS2 revenue isn't that surprising. Guitar Hero still makes monster cash on that platform.

You saw low sales of PC games but then again it appears that those low sales also netted them $1.152 billion in subscription sales.

Had to change my sig to get some moderator to quit bitching about it......

Wow the Wii is really rockin'.
Granted nothing is going to overtake WoW subscriptions till they decide to bring those to consoles. Thats in the future im guessing.

It's just that simple.

I'm guessing that retail sales of Wrath of the Lich King and other MMO boxes gets thrown into the MMORPG category, while the sales of other games on PC like Call of Duty and Warcraft 3 goes under that $99 million.

I'm sure most of the handhelds revenue is thanks to the DS, guitar hero is selling very well on it.

Yeah, WoW is a serious cashcow. Imagine having 10m people paying you $100 each a year...

The only real competitor I can imagine to WoW would be a Pokemon MMORPG (and its a different demographic, so they can co-exist).

It would be interesting to see profits though - WoW would cost a metric-shitload to operate...

Wii code: 2263 4706 2910 1099

So it's actually PC/MMORPG #1, Wii #2, 360#3, PS2 #4, and PS3 #5.

That's actually what I figured but not good for Sony, if people drop PS2 support this year it'll bring down revenue for both Sony and developers...
