 but what is my motivation for sticking with the game for 20 hours when as far as I know no character except for Ashe, who the game makes me hate, and Basche, who is beyond boring?

Well, in addition to the most gender-balanced, feminist and multicultural characters ever to appear in a role-playing game, some of the greatest voice acting of all time, and a dynamite storyline, there's also this small, tiny, unimportant thing called geopolitics, which FF12 just happened to get right:

Iraq = Dalmasca

Rabanastre = Baghdad

US Empire = Archades

Uh.  No.  Your reading in something that isn't there on that one.

If you knew more about Matsuno you'd know.  That's just the kind of story he tells.

The whole setting practically mirrors Tactics Ogre: Let Us Cling Together.

Except that dealt with even more serious themes including ethnic cleansing.

He had to dumb down the political stuff and tough thinking ideas because it didn't sell.

Yeah, agreed with kasz on this one. Not to say that XII didn't have geopolitics, because it did, but I don't think it was supposed to be a stand-in for any real world conflict.

I thought it was ok, but I found it kinda boring. The game played itself once you got the hang of Gambits... All you do is walk....

The story wasn't exactly top notch Award winning Novel Material for me either....

It doesn't HAVE to be that way.  I mean you could just gambit your party members then play as the main character yourself.

That's what i did.

I need to restart a class based challenge on this game...

Well after i get through one of the 5 games i'm playing anyway.

Final Fantasy is the JRPG that everybody buys because of it's name.

    Final Fantasy is the jRPG that non-jRPG fans buy because it's the one they can enjoy. The "Final Fantasy only sells because of the name!" excuse has gotten old.

I liked it. Alot. One of my favorite FF's. I liked that they got rid of turned based game play, because the gambit system was awesome. I hope they never go back. Didn't care for the license grid, but it wasn't terrible. No love story for once, and the story itself was great. graphics were good. It seems like I'm in the minority but I really, REALLY liked this game. Two thumbs up!

EDIT- When fighting elites, I would try over and over to figure out how to beat them ( I don't strategy guides. Cheating), and when I got it right it was amazingly satisfying. It's like making music on paper, and seeing an orchestra played it perfectly.  Beautiful.

This is ether my second or 3rd favorite FF game ever

Tell me.  Why is it the one they can enjoy?

There is nothing special about Final Fantasy compared to the others.

Outside of 12's MMO battle style and 11 being an MMO what's been different.

Final Fantasy doesn't only sell because of it's name.  It sells because of it's name and it's marketing budget.

Final Fantasy sells because of the massive amount of cash poured into it by Sony. (Yes sony)  For FF7.

Before then it was just another RPG in the west sales wise... even when it was at the top of the game.

A capable argument could be made that it sells on its quality, which is factor of its massive appeal. There was never a point in the franchise's history where it was "just another JRPG" saleswise, at least not in the States.

Playing around wiht core mechanics that change from game to game, building on different ideas of character progression, having generally great writing, being a mishmash of the best talents in th industry at any given time.... Final Fantasy does a lot of things right.

I disagree.  Before 7 the numbers of the final fantasy sales weren't off other games from what i recall.

The site doesn't have the best numbers on it.  Most likely numbers just taken from a press release but note FF6 was the big hit for square with FF4 having sales below Secret of Mana and Chrono Trigger.

Dragon Warrior sold 500,000 in the US.  Final Fantasy 1 was almost definitly below that.  Original release i believe only being 400,000 copies world wide.

At most you could argue it was Final Fantasy 6 that got Final Fantasy some of it's "cred" with the marketing pushing it over.

But in the west Final Fantasy was an average RPG until 6/7.
