It sells because of it's name and it's marketing budget. Final Fantasy sells because of the massive amount of cash poured into it by Sony. (Yes sony) For FF7. Before then it was just another RPG in the west sales wise... even when it was at the top of the game.

A capable argument could be made that it sells on its quality, which is factor of its massive appeal. There was never a point in the franchise's history where it was "just another JRPG" saleswise, at least not in the States.
Playing around wiht core mechanics that change from game to game, building on different ideas of character progression, having generally great writing, being a mishmash of the best talents in th industry at any given time.... Final Fantasy does a lot of things right.
