 but what is my motivation for sticking with the game for 20 hours when as far as I know no character except for Ashe, who the game makes me hate, and Basche, who is beyond boring?

Well, in addition to the most gender-balanced, feminist and multicultural characters ever to appear in a role-playing game, some of the greatest voice acting of all time, and a dynamite storyline, there's also this small, tiny, unimportant thing called geopolitics, which FF12 just happened to get right:

Iraq = Dalmasca

Rabanastre = Baghdad

US Empire = Archades

Uh.  No.  Your reading in something that isn't there on that one.

If you knew more about Matsuno you'd know.  That's just the kind of story he tells.

The whole setting practically mirrors Tactics Ogre: Let Us Cling Together.

Except that dealt with even more serious themes including ethnic cleansing.

He had to dumb down the political stuff and tough thinking ideas because it didn't sell.

Yeah, agreed with kasz on this one. Not to say that XII didn't have geopolitics, because it did, but I don't think it was supposed to be a stand-in for any real world conflict.
