Forums - Gaming - People quitting online matches on Street Fighter IV should be punished.

If there was any possible way to differentiate between quitters and people who genuinely got disconnected, then yeah. But as long as there isn't, I personally don't think so. I really wouldn't want people who did nothing wrong to get punished.

Getting disconnected is a rare event, it isn't a big deal to punish the innocent a little bit if it means that half of matches won't end prematurely. Does it really matter a lot if someone loses some points due to their router going down?

The cost/benefit analysis is pretty easy on this one.

It's okay to punish the innocent if you only do it a little? Come on, man, you honestly think that? I don't think it's okay to punish the innocent under any circumstances. However, like Machina-AX said, Starcraft's system is fine. I don't understand why people don't use that system.

Oh please, we're not talking about the death penalty or throwing people in jail. We're talking about losing a few points at an online game, in the unlikely event your connection goes down without it being your fault. People can get those points back in no time I suppose.

These are the two available choices here:

1- Not punish anyone. A lot of matches end prematurely due to sore losers, making the online experience feel frustrating for tons of people. This may turn people off the game, and cripple the online experience further.

2- Consistently punishing people who manipulate the online system in their favor, while rarely taking a few points away from people who got disconnected.

Are you telling me you choose the first one?

Yeah, I am. I really don't think people should be unfairly punished, even if they are a minority within the "casualties".

@Majin-Tenshinhan: I just hope you realize that you are valuing the damn score as much as the sore losers who go to the trouble of manually disconnecting to keep the size of their e-penis.

I respect your opinion but I don't understand the point of that choice really. I'd lose a few points anyday if it meant a non-frustrating online experience. Does the score really matter that much?

It's not because of the score, it's because I firmly believe that people who got disconnected due to their internet screwing up or something similar shouldn't get demerits. I still think the Starcraft system is the best one, and should be implemented into most games. That way, if you see someone has a shitload of disconnects you can easily tell he's a quitter.

I love this drama, it's a pity I ran out of popcorn about an hour ago.

:P

Machina's idea seems to be the best I suppose.

i had this problem playing DBZ burst limit... i think there shouldn't be a quit option you have to stay

Yeah, but you don't have to have bad ping for your internet to disconnect. I'm not saying that their internet is disconnecting, I'm sure they are quitting. But if you got demerits for leaving a match and then you get disconnected sometime, well, that's not your fault and you shouldn't get punished for it. Which is why I think the system is alright the way it is, although it does allow some lameasses to slip through the cracks.

Why not adopt a Win/Loss/Disconnect system then? That system has been used in Starcraft since its launch over 10 years ago, so it's not like it would be difficult to introduce nowadays.

If someone genuinely disconnects it counts towards their disconnect record, not their loss record. If they actually quit the game they get a loss. Obviously this means some people intentionally disconnect, but most people view disconnects as losses anyway so there's an incentive there not to do that if you care about your record that much.

Theres a disconnect system on Smackdown vs raw 2007 aswell, that just sprung to mind.

I play smackdown vs raw 07 a fair bit still & everyones disconnect percentage is low.

And as others have said, maybe it is unfair to punish those who get disconnected genuinely...........

But what about those who play online a lot? your going to alienate your frequent users if they get p*ssed off with sore losers quitting all the time.

I don't think that people could leave online matches, they should remove the option, it would be easier.
