Persona 3 FES, then Persona 4

Edit:

Final Fantasy X, NO.. The water polo part will make you want to shoot yourself. If you want to shoot yourself, do it in Persona 3. ~_n

You shut your mouth! Blitzball ruled!

Damn straight.

I guess everyone likes Final Fantasy X and Kingdom Hearts? Do I need to play the other Final Fantasy games to understand X?

Kingdom Hearts sounds familiar. I think I saw it at Walmart once. Is it really fun?

How hard are they? Ratchet and Clank were hard sometimes but really fun.

Friends Forever nyu~

I would go with Final Fantasy X. It's my second favorite game of all time. Excellent and a great starter RPG.

Blitzball was and still is amazing

no.  they all involve their own stories (except for FFX-2 which is a sort of sequel to FFX)

personally i would recommend FFIX, it came out for the PS1, but it should work on the ps2 and its my favourite FF. (ffX is good though as well...just not as good)

Final Fantasy X is a good start. I love the level up system, and the story is great. You don't have to play the other FFs to understand the story. As for Kingdom Hearts, skip the first one and play the second one. It's very fun.

If it's your first RPG, then DON'T play a Shin Megami Tensei game, because after that all other RPGs will simply pale in comparison.

I'm going to go out on a limb and recommend... Odin Sphere? ;)

This person speaks the truth. SMT: Nocturne is, imo, the best RPG on the PS2. I love the dark, mature theme in it. The story is amazing, it has some amazing dungeon designs, and I love the freedom it has: choosing your allies, path, skills, etc,

I would recommend either Suikoden 3 or Suikoden 5

Systems I own (Games)

Sony: PS1 (8), PS2 (60) , PS3 (5), PSP (12)

What would everyone recommend to someone who wants to try an RPG and only has a playstation 2?

The game database says "Final Fantasy X" sold the most so should I try that?

Dragon Quest VIII

Suikoden III

Odin Sphere

Final Fantasy XII

Also, take a look at the backlog of PSX RPGs.  Suikoden I and II, Chrono Cross, Final Fantasy VIII, Dragon Warrior/Quest VII, etc.
