Forums - Gaming - Designing games for Superman and Iron Man

You got a point. Once they're showing pics or gameplay footages the game is already halfway finished and the game mechanics are already finalized. It'll be too late by then.

As for comicbook audiences, it's a sure bet there's a lot of audience crossover between videogames and comics. They previewed a lot of games at the recent comicon. They'd probably recognize ZOE2, and they probably can envision a good Iron Man game based on ZOE2 mechanics.

Maybe I should try sega.com forums also. Maybe stir some ideas there so the regulars would nag the devs day and night.

Anyway, @everyone, how about Supes?

Put Iron Man in an Armor Wars type scenario.

Take Superman to a world that isn't Earth, maybe all the way to New Genesis.

It's all about how you set up the opposition.

@khuutra

Nice point. In the last Iron Man game, Tony was mostly battling bazooka-equipped soldiers and tanks. Not entirely a fair fight . If he were battling the likes of Doctor Doom (or Doombots will suffice), then much better.

I guess the problem is they have to have semblance with the movies, and the licensing involved when using villains not part of the movie.

On a side note, I remember a mod for Quake3, Bid for Power. Originally a Dragonball Z themed mod, I think it could look great as an Iron Man game, too (at least on multiplayer mode).

Superman needs to work on his heat vision, IMO. It doesn't really look spectacular on screen, straight red ray is too much golden era. At least, Cyclops had his Mega Optic Blast.

Actually, we may be approaching this from the wrong angle, especially with Superman.

Why scale back Superman and his abilities at all? He's the ultimate sandbox game hero, only limited by the reflexes of the person playing as him. What makes Superman interesting is when his powers simply aren't enough to solve his problems - so build a narrative around that, around a need to make choices where it isn't clear what's right and what isn't, where any decision you make may have horrible effects regardless of how many lives you save.

Well, if he made some mistakes, he'd just reverse the spin of the earth to undo them.

Superman vs. Godzilla would be a cool game.

Also I think his heat vision works best if it isn't visible between him and the target.

Hmm. Kinda like Shadow of the Colossus, only more badass.

As for the heat vision, yeah in the "real" world it'll be more practical that enemies won't see his heat vision. But players would need some sort of cue that they're firing into something.

I think if it's heat vision, shouldn't be it shaped like a cone (wide) so that it covers his view perspective? Just askin'.

Man I have no idea. Maybe you could adjust it somehow? Like if it was in first-person you could zoom in or out depending on the area you want to heat up.

Yeah, the visual indicator is problematic. Maybe with a heating up effect on whatever surface you're staring at? If it was steel it would have heat waves come off of it and slowly work through the color heat gradient until it melted away?

Now that you mentioned steel, I got into thinking: all objects must be destructible somehow. It cannot be just a particular slab of steel. He's Superman. A 4-foot pile of sandbags won't stop him. A building wouldn't, either.

Imagine a scene where he's battling a superpowered dude. Punches Supes. And Supes smashes through a building. People inside staring inside as he stands up to rejoin the fight. That'll be awesome.

Goes to show we really haven't yet reached the pinnacle of game technology (if ever).
