Man I have no idea. Maybe you could adjust it somehow? Like if it was in first-person you could zoom in or out depending on the area you want to heat up.
Yeah, the visual indicator is problematic. Maybe with a heating up effect on whatever surface you're staring at? If it was steel it would have heat waves come off of it and slowly work through the color heat gradient until it melted away?
