metallica is a bunch of pathetic sellouts, no offense to those who like them.

You are thinking primarily of Ulrich. He was the one that bitched about that whole Napster "I Disappear" crap back in 2000. P2P file sharing networks ftw!

You may say they are sellouts (probably because of The Black Album and then later Load) but it really wasn't selling out as it was, everything in the 90s was shit.

St. Anger, it is their worst album. No one is arguing it isn't. However, they did it because it was their music, it was their album, they did what they wanted, which doesn't make them sellouts.

As for Death Magnetic, I like it, it rocks but "The Day That Never Comes" and "The Unforgiven III" aren't metal tracks, they are definitely hard rock. So I guess they aren't living up to their name "Metallica".

Everything in the 90's was shit? Megadeth made Rust in Peace in 1990 (their beast album IMO) and Countdown to Extinction in 1992. Testament released The Ritual (best album IMO) in 1992. Dream theater did Images and Words. Symphony X realeased The Divine Wings of Tragedy (which is not only their best album but one of my all time favorite records. And Meshuggah released Destroy Erase Improve and Chaosphere. I could go on and on about widely praised and influential albums from the 90's, so to say it's all shit is a bit of an unfair generalization. Also personally I find Master of Puppets to be Metallica's worst album even though I know many, many, MANY people will disagree with me.

^this is pretty much bang on, lot's of good music was released in the 90's. Countdown to extinction by Megadeth just so happens to be my favorite album too

If you think the 90's was bad, I think that you failed to listen to any of Dream Theater's albums.

Back from the dead, I'm afraid.

How can people not like older Metallica?

Granted, their later stuff is absolute garbage, and they are sell outs (Lars in particular is a real douch that can't play and never practices), but their 80s stuff is wonderfully well written, and some of my favorite music.

<=== is metal all the way

My top 5 favs are:

- 'tallica

- Dream Theater

- Machine Head

- Testament

Underoath and Norma Jean are metalcore.

metalcore is a pretty broad genre. It encompasses several subgenres.

I prefer mathcore bands for the most part. But as far as I'm concerned mathcore is metalcore. I honestly wouldn't be able to discern the difference if I didn't have a last.fm account. I'm not someone who can recognize different time signatures.

I like grindcore too.

Also why has no one mentioned Isis yet? :(
And I'm gonna be seeing a great sludge band called Rosetta in a couple of weeks.

I don't listen to music like I used to but I still enjoy a lot of metal. Thrash, speed, doom, stoner, sludge, rap, industrial, power, progressive and avant-garde metal constitute the majority of the metal I listen to but I also like bands in several other sub-genres of metal. Recently I've been listening mostly to Motorhead, Buckethead, Racer X and Ministry.
