Unfortunately there is nothing available that is immune to something like a dead laser.

Mine has been giving me a serious hard time with my controllers. I need the usb cable just to turn the damn things on each time.

you should be able to request your own system back.

A similar thing happened to me. One day I tried to play a disc and it wouldn't read it. It stopped reading any of my discs. It was near the age of yours as well. I just got another one. I didn't want to go through all the hassle of sending it in and waiting 1 month to get it fixed.

let us know how it goes because i have a 60 GB as well and i'd hate it if they sent me anything that wasn't the original.

unlucky dude, but hopefully Sony will step up and fix it for you, without sending you a different console.

Have you tried re-synching the controllers to your PS3?

(there's a recessed button to do this on the underside of the controller - just push it with a ball point pen refill or somesuch)

my nephews went out his mom my sister bought the warranty at target but can find the reciept so he has not gotten it fixed for 6 months still.
I told her to call sony they might have fixed it free but NOOO. they wait until its to late to call idiots.

And my friend the conradonator lets his son play they leave it on all night in the game menu and it wont read blurays or games either.

Iam like telling him turn it off if your not using it, folding@home is onething but leaving it in a game menu were the reader is on is not smart.

I seriously doubt Sony will try to send back a unit that doesn't have all the features of your current system. I can't speak for other countries, but in the US you have specific rights regarding what they send back, so I doubt they would try and cheat you out of BC, etc. Talk about inviting a class-action lawsuit...

If that ever did happen it would be due to some sort of clerical error and a phone call to Sony would likely get someone's attention and get the error corrected.

I wouldn't worry too much about it.
