I hope everyone is going to say single player... Please! I hope we're not at a certain point in time where we don't care about a good story and stuff... Right?

Single player shouldn't be an extra to a game.

Some of the best singleplayer games ever made have no story at all.

Being pro-singleplayer is fine, but don't be such for the wrong reasons.

It really depends what game. I never felt for a second that Warhawk was missing a single player game in there. If the next Call of Duty, Killzone 2 or half a dozen other FPS games ditch their SP's, I wouldn't blink an eye. Same thing for Madden. I'd take an entirely online Madden over an entirely single player on any day.

Did you notice "and stuff"? Don't worry, I didn't try to pull a DTG here! =P

I know I could never get bored playing R-Type and Gradius, even though the only thing you have to do is "shoot the core". Those single player games have replay value. Retro gaming is cool, you have the "shove it up your friend's face" option because of the arcade feeling the games have, and you still know that developers put all their hearts into creating an experience!

I was just saying that I hope developers will never put more focus on multiplayer than single player.

@ Onyx: Yes, this I can agree with, because the developers knew they wanted to create a multiplayer game. It was the "main feature" of the game. Like NBA Jam, you can't play this game in single player! At least you know that the game has the same mechanics in both the sp and mp, so the developers didn't really focus on something else than just adding bots in the sp.

Random game thought :
Why is Bionic Commando Rearmed 2 getting so much hate? We finally get a real game and they're not even satisfied... I'm starting to hate the gaming community so f****** much...

Single player is everything. Games that lack it are hollow and empty. That's not to say that online multiplayer is bad. Allow me to delve further.

There have been a few multiplayer only games that are fairly good. Counterstrike, WoW, ect. Those games are great. However, speaking generally, and painting with a broad brush, online multiplayer only games aren't worth my damn time. I bought a game, not an engine, and I don't want to rely on the same asshole internet friends I've played every game since DaoC with, to yet again make another lame ass engine fun with their presence.

The only exception here is the game Phantasy Star Online. It was an absolute blast, and "multiplayer only" yet much of the fun with that game could be had alone, in the docking station, and it wasn't bogged down with a ton of internet chat. I'll give it to PSO, great game.

That said, RE4 kicks its shit, as does any game with a great single player campaign, like Galaxy.

NO NO, NO NO NO.

CoD4 had imo, the best single player campaign in a shooter to date. I wouldn't just blink an eye, I wouldn't buy the damn thing again if it didn't have what I consider its best aspect, single player.

Another game that sucks ass because of halfassed single player is Resistance 2. Look how well that one turned out. Focusing on the online aspect of a game is fine...but your marketing team better hope that doesn't get out, unless their game in on PC.

Repetition, no matter how interesting, is tedious. Online gaming is repetition. It's grinding. It's interesting grinding with other humans, granted, but it'll never be as diverse an experience as a good single player campaign. The MMO genre actually conbines SP and MP with great results, but most of us want to overlook that genre, and go right to the lameass FPS multiplayer that is as stale as petrified mammoth shit. What was the lastest innovation in that genre, the online FPS? Besides improved graphics, that is? Nothing. Nothing that counterstrike didn't do better years and years ago.

Online shooters are like the Wii. You decide what I mean by that.

I assume you mean entirely MP? So offline co-op is still there

I sort of agre that I game like CoD 4 can get away with a 6 hour campaign because of MP, but then again, if there is no SP at all, those just buying for the SP don't end up getting short changed

No I love a good fps SP game gears cod moh and if i had a PS3 I would be really looking forward to KZ2.

I feel you can tell the good from the bad if you encounter a good SP game.

Something that makes you think.

That is exactly what I find it is grinding.

In saying that I do not want to appear to be undermining it as one mans grind is another mans pleasure.

Still good to see a bit of support for my preference as I would feel to undermine SP would be a mistake.

I don't get how online is more tedious and repetitive as single player. If I play the same Team Deathmatch on the same Ship map in COD4 it's always going to provide me with a different experience, because human AI is far more advanced than videogame AI. Playing the sinking ship mission in COD4 over and over I feel would be far more tedious and repetitive, because each experience would basically mirror the last. Enemies pop up at the same time, they generally cover in the same area, they have the same weapons each time. These are all things that would be unpredicatable in multiplayer.

It seems to me the only reason you think MP is more tedious than SP is probably because you're comparing them under the assumption that you spend one 5-6 hour session in SP, making it completely fresh, and 30-60 hours in MP, making it more tedious because more time was spent in it overall. However, give that single player another 5-10 playthroughs and I'm sure that too would feel mighty repetitive, since it'll be the exact same experience over and over.

@Munkeh-I just mean that if I were given a choice as to which I could keep in those games, I would choose the multiplayer. Co-op in most games would technically be considered the single player, unless were talking about Res 2's mode, which would be seperate. I don't mean all games either, but I stick by my examples.

splitscreen multiplayer or singleplayer that would be a hard choice
