Forums - Nintendo - Why is the Conduit 'meh?'

I fit into the "meh" catagory, and I explained my position in some detail in a topic a while back. But I will re-iterate in short here.

In essence it's because it's a PC game from 2003. Looking at "rival" FPS games like Fear 2 and Killzone 2 the game template has moved on considerably. Short life meters, Regenerating health, advanced AI, heavily scripted cinematic stages, epic cinematic boss encouneters, and large deep online team oriented and easy to jump in and play multiplayer.

The Conduit plays like the old template of FPS games that got tired and evolved. Every clip has showed the main character running into a room guns blazing, and then walking side to side while shooting enemies that just stand there and wait to be killed. In the latest "Developer walkthrough" they said the enemies had advanced AI routines like...ducking...and rolling out of the way...Basically, Golden Eye level AI. The boss battle that's been shown off a few times is more like Turok than Resistance. A big monster comes into a wide open area and you strafe and shoot until he's dead. Compare that to fighting the Leviathan in Resistance 2.

It's big selling points involve being able to change you hud...and aiming sensitivity....wow. That and it's on wii. When asked in interviews about "why should gamers be excited for this game if they have something other than a wii" they have never come up with an answer other than "we want to put a good shooter on wii". And that's it's selling point.

The FPS genre has evolved. The conduit looks like Quake on wii. That doesn't mean it will be a bad game. Quake 4 was a fun romp if not a bit simplistic. It just means that it's going to be "meh" to anybody that has any other gaming system other than a wii. I may still get it at some point, but I'm not even remotely excited for it.

You can find me on facebook as Markus Van Rijn, if you friend me just mention you're from VGchartz and who you are here.

I think its a "seeing is believing" thing for most people on the fence. They'll need to play it to see how good/bad it really is. I like FPS games, so I'll pick it up as long as it doesn't end up abysmal.

@bardicverse

Actually for myself it's in whole the multiplayer aspect, I've never played a shooter alone, ever. Even Call of Duty 4 was played online with friends that I knew in real life. I purchased the game because they would. Sadly most of these same friends aren't interested in The Conduit, and as a result I have no reason to be.

VGC could do it's own league and what not, but it wouldn't be the same just playing with online folks. I mean Monster Hunter Tri however is being eye'd by a lot of my friends, and when they get it, I'll... never mind regardless of if they get it I'll get it. If publishers should be eyeing anything that's what they should be looking at.

Aside from FFCC, I can't think of any third party effort that will sell gangbusters on the Wii like Monster Hunter Tri. (Outside of any Rythm games or life style games.)

I'm Unamerica and you can too.

Fair point dib8rman. I think the other thing is that there are so many FPS games, good and bad alike, that the whole package together really needs to prove itself, which is why I say a good chunk of people are "seeing is believing". Will it have the wacky fun feel of TimeSplitters 2? Will it have a lot of play modes like Unreal Tournament? Will it take itself seriously like Halo? There's so much we won't know until we play it.

I´ll reserve judgement till I play the game, but the developers´ track record doesn´t inspire confidence.

But since proven developers making mistakes is not uncommon and unproven developers 'shining' for the first time is not impossible, here´s hoping this title will be a good experience.

It's meh to me, because I'm primarily a PC gamer, and interested in consoles as far as they give me an experience that my PC can't provide. Generally this means exclusives of exceptional quality, good enough ports of games my current PC is incapable of running properly, and multiplayer games that're played with many people behind the same screen.

Conduit looks like a solid game, and I'm interested in seeing how it's going to do, but it's definitely not one that I'd buy myself. There are simply too many excellent FPS games on the PC for me to invest time and money into this one, and I barely buy any new games for full price anyway.

Because Call of Duty 4 has spoilt all PS3, 360 or PC owners, and no FPS will ever live up to it

It's 'meh' because as FPSs go it's years behind the curve in everything from artistry, to AI to gameplay. As Vagabond7 says it's not better (or doesn't look to be) than a PC FPS 5 or so years ago.

Having said that, I'd love a pure run and gun FPS for my Wii and I'll definately pick this up. However this won't convert any HD FPS fans and most FPS fans already own one of the HD systems or high-end PCs.

The Conduit, due to it's simple, pure gameplay may win over a lot of new Wii owners or lapsed gamers to the FPS experience though.

What do you mean by simple, pure gameplay? I don't see any difference from it or any other FPS at the same point in development. Expect graphics when compared to HD FPS.

From what I've seen I'm just not impressed. It's like CoD:WaW to me... "Nothing Special"
