Microsoft keeps buying exclusives from third party, but how much longer can they go on doing this? Third parties will gladly accept the money to make a game exclusive to the 360, but it doesn’t come cheap, and doesn’t always pay off. If Microsoft were smart they would put the money  they are wasting on third party, and get some first party started. These days a console can’t live on just third party, especially with Sony going all out on their first party. Modern games are so expensive to make these days, that a third party would need a really good reason to make their game exclusive.

This paragraph is very true. Microsofts 1st parties are almost non-existant. They have a few good exclusives, but if you look at their top games on IGN or Metacritic they're mostly multiplats like GTA, Bioshock, etc. That is excluding games like Mass Effect, Gears of War and Halo which are great.

I think the may point to take is - mass effect, bioshock's time exclusivity, rock band's time exclusivity, GTA's exclusive dlc, portal's dlc, ect., MS is paying for this competitive advantage.  the more ps3s in the world (regardless of market share) the higher cost MS will have to pay to keep those advantages.  how long until it is cost prohibitive for MS?  and what then? will MS's "almost non-existant" first party be the only ones creating exclusive content for the 360?

i'll be honest, i hope so.  MS, if you want to have content to define your console please spend more time making awesome content for your console and less time playing interference on the compitition.

I think that's a false choice, though. There's nothing preventing Microsoft from contracting out to third parties to make games for their system, at least as far as I can see. They can pay upkeep on their own studios, or they can save that money, take some of it to Capcom or Square-Enix or whoever, and say, "Let's make a game." I don't see why that's considered to be a dirty tactic or moneyhatting or whatever, and I do think it's pretty funny that first party is suddenly king to so many people now that Sony is having to rely so heavily on theirs.

I will say that I'm less cool with timed exclusivity or exclusive DLC, though. It doesn't bother me as much as it does some people, but it does sort of reek of cockblocking.

The simple answer - YES. They are making quite a profit from licensing/software sales.

In regards to the GTA IV DLC, I saw an ad for this last night, and I was impressed. I can see it pulling a big chunk of biker enthusiasts, and that's a considerably large crowd. Smart move by MS for securing the DLC, it will pay off hansomely.

Can Microsoft continue to buy it’s way to victory?

http://techhall.wordpress.com/2009/02/18/can-xbox-continue-to-buy-its-way-to-victory/

It is no doubt that Microsoft, the creators of the Xbox 360, have put a lot of money into beating sony. With a major price drop on the 360, buying exclusive content, and even paying other developers of sony exclusives to bring their game to the console. While this strategy has worked very well so far, how long can it continue? How long can Microsoft continue to buy it’s way to victory?

When Microsoft first said price drop, no one expected to be at the scale it was. The Xbox actually dropped in price lower than the Wii, which is drastically inferior the the Xbox. A massive price cut right before the holidays greatly raised sales. This was a desperate move for Microsoft as the PS3 started outselling the 360 for many months in a row. Shortly after the price cut, Xbox sales went up, but were still almost being matched by the PS3, which is currently selling at double the price. It helped the Xbox, but not as much as microsoft intended.

No one can doubt that Microsoft puts towards tons of money on gaining exclusive content, either it be Downloadable content, or games. Now most of the time, this ends up being a waste for Microsoft. Microsoft payed $50 million for exclusive GTA downloadable content that released almost over a year after the game came out. Now many people are out of the “GTA Phase” and have moved on to bigger, better games. This isn’t the first time Microsoft has wasted money on exclusive rights.

Microsoft has to much money to throw away, with so much wasted money on exclusive content, console repairs, price drop, and more. Even after all these actions, the Xbox continues to be outsold by the Wii, and equally numbed by the PS3. With so many great PS3 games coming out soon, such as Killzone 2, it is no doubt that Microsoft really needs to step up their game if they plan to stay ahead.

I stopped reading this grammatical train wreck after seeing the title.

Skeeuk, I never thought you'd stoop to such a low level. My heavens - if this fool ever tried to write for a real paper/magazine, he'd be laughed back to his flat. This person needs to quit spewing propaganda and pick up an Engrish book.

And seriously, I am at the point of NOT taking anything you say seriously.

This sounds like the blog belongs to an anal 14 year old.. He didn't even bring up any point everybody didn't already think about.. No thought out info. Boy, quit posting shit like that.

Well, I guess I can just rearrange the title:

Can people keep keep buying Xbox's to victory?

And that's the only thing I need is *this*. I don't need this or this. Just this PS4... And this gaming PC. - The PS4 and the Gaming PC and that's all I need... And this Xbox 360. - The PS4, the Gaming PC, and the Xbox 360, and that's all I need... And these PS3's. - The PS4, and these PS3's, and the Gaming PC, and the Xbox 360... And this Nintendo DS. - The PS4, this Xbox 360, and the Gaming PC, and the PS3's, and that's all *I* need. And that's *all* I need too. I don't need one other thing, not one... I need this. - The Gaming PC and PS4, and Xbox 360, and thePS3's . Well what are you looking at? What do you think I'm some kind of a jerk or something! - And this. That's all I need.

Obligatory dick measuring Gaming Laptop Specs: Sager NP8270-GTX: 17.3" FULL HD (1920X1080) LED Matte LC, nVIDIA GeForce GTX 780M, Intel Core i7-4700MQ, 16GB (2x8GB) DDR3, 750GB SATA II 3GB/s 7,200 RPM Hard Drive

Someone is asking if MICROSOFT can BUY and OUTSPEND? Seriously, what the hell are they thinking? Both Sony and MS models are similar. WIth all the resources MS have they can spend for a long, long time.

That GTAIV reference is ridiculous

Having downloaded and played... I reckon this just may be the best DLC ever... and I expect huge sales.

Best???? Content to a game that was rated biggest dissapointement in 2008 on vgchartz.

hehe, why are you surprised?

Are you not the one who wrote - "(MS) produced the big halo-series. I`ve played number 1. Great game. Simple story. Simple game. For simple people. That have simple minds. Which actually are the majority in the world."

Or did you just copy/paste that from someone elses blog?

@ Kirby

I love you too.

You also need an Xbox Live Gold account to download and play. So if they can get even just 100k new users on Xbox Live that will help tremendously.
