Forums - Gaming - Chrono Trigger's the hardest RPG in history

This is going to sound incredibly noobish, but...

The part when you go back into the past and need to save that queen or whatever. I don't know how far I am, but I've got 4:53 hours on it so far.

In fairness, you're only given two clues here. Some castle-dwellers mentioned that the queen was last seen near the cathedral, before Marle showed up and the search was called off. In the cathedral, some of the "nuns" mention music...

Take it away, mate.

5hrs in and your in 600ad and haven't saved Marle?

Back from the dead, I'm afraid.

What? Chrono Trigger was easy. You want a hard RPG, I'll give you one.

Right now.

You are standing on the edge of a cliff. To your west, there is a fatal cliff drop. To your north is a haunted house, which is on fire. To your east, a firing squad, just starting to aim. To your south, a grue is approaching. In your inventory, you have a DS, 5 bucks, and a hoagie. What do you do?

Rubang, that's easy.

Throw the hoagie at the grue, pay off the firing squad, and use the DS to navigate your way in and out of the haunted house on fire.

I think there's a different challenge involved in more turn-based games... and by the way, I have something harder than Lufia now that I think about it: Seventh Saga.

Ugh... no kidding. Though I do consider part of the challenge in that game to be cheap. If you want to be able to do more than 10 damage, you have to defend before each attack. Meanwhile, the enemy gets to attack you for full damage every round, or worse yet, use magic, which defending seems to do nothing against... I think that's why I finally just gave up on that one...

Oh yeah, and it's also high up on the where do I go now category...

Ah yes, 7th Saga was pretty bad once you get to the point that you have to fight an opponent that's the same level as you (for their rune), and can use tons of very cheap attacks, with seemingly infinite MP.

Yeah,

I don't even like this game so far, I just want something to play until one of the good RPG's become availible (Star Ocean 4 Dragon Quest 5 re-stock).

You don't even like Chrono Trigger, and you're considering selling your Wii because it doesn't have enough good platformers on it, even though it has 10 systems worth of platformers?

I don't know what to tell you. Maybe you don't actually like games. Or even worse, maybe you don't actually like fun. Go see a doctor.

As much as I love JRPG's, I think I just suck at them.

I get tricked so damn easily. I know I spent over an hour flying around looking for Zaude in Vesperia, not knowing that's where I was suspose to go.

Just out of curiosity, where are you in the game? Did you get lost looking for Melchior or something?

By my calculations, the game will take you about... 150 hours to beat. Just kidding 8)

Stick with it, because Chrono Trigger, in addition to being possibly the greatest, is also a great starter-rpg. . . the only drawback being that it makes older SNES games, even most of FFVI, look bad in terms of graphics and polish*.

The part you're on is actually the only potentially confusing transition I can remember from the whole game. It doesn't have any of the confusing bits like the recent Tales games where they throw a huge world map at you and expect you to remember the name of every desert porta-potty. Explore the world map, take in the sights, take up a hobby, figure out the cathedral puzzle, get a bit further (like 1-2 hours more), and believe me, you'll love it.

*But they remake those games so often, we'll probably be playing them all in 4D in a couple more years.
