It doesn't go over 8 million by much, it doesn't go under 8 million and yet week after week it sits proudly at 8 million.
Does anyone have a kinky/serious explanation as to why this 8 million mark is so important we have to stare at it for ages?

I didn't even notice. The 360 has been tracking ahead of the ps3 in recent times...perhaps it would change soon?

Now: 8.03M
Mid March: 8.2M

I know it seems like it is stuck at 8 million but for the first week of January the 360 was 230k from being 8 million head, so a 265k lead has grown over the last 5 or so weeks.

8,000,000 / 2012 (the year of said apocalypse) = 3976
3976 / 5.97 (Mass of Earth in Kg x 10^24) = 666 The Mark of the Beast!
It's merely another marker of our impending doom.

I would say it is because the PS3 and XBox 360 sell to a very similar demographic which results in any gained sales from one platform comming at the expense of sales to the other platform ... On top of this the market for these consoles in English speaking consoles is (roughly) balanced by the market for these consoles in non-english speaking countries, and the advantage Microsoft has in English speaking countries is roughly balanced by the advantage sony has in non-English speaking countries ... Finally, the XBox 360 and the PS3 have been trading off roughly equal periods where each console has better exclusives or is comming off of a price cut.

It seems like the Christmas sting is still on its consumers, wait until it wears off and the 360 should gain a bit more momentum in America thus widening the gap more. A PS3 price drop isn't coming anytime soon so MS is in a pretty safe spot for the next (I'm assuming) 1-2 years.
