I would say it is because the PS3 and XBox 360 sell to a very similar demographic which results in any gained sales from one platform comming at the expense of sales to the other platform ... On top of this the market for these consoles in English speaking consoles is (roughly) balanced by the market for these consoles in non-english speaking countries, and the advantage Microsoft has in English speaking countries is roughly balanced by the advantage sony has in non-English speaking countries ... Finally, the XBox 360 and the PS3 have been trading off roughly equal periods where each console has better exclusives or is comming off of a price cut.
