Its clearly a sign of the impending apocalypse. I'll prove it mathematically for you:
8,000,000 / 2012 (the year of said apocalypse) = 3976
3976 / 5.97 (Mass of Earth in Kg x 10^24) = 666 The Mark of the Beast!
It's merely another marker of our impending doom.
On a related note: I hear the Second Coming of Christ is just around the corner!
