Forums - Sony - Killzowned Engine to bring in more PS3 Exclusives!

Awesome and good article except where he says its with a doubt the best looking game released so far. We all know Crysis is still much better. Either way can't wait to get my pre-order in the mail.

I'll wait for some video game announcements b4 I start cheering.

I wonder if they'll outsource it to any third parties.

I'm gonna say no since they'll use the KILLZOWNED engine to make 360 games ;)

You mean license it to third parties.

Would like to see the new Doom game use this. Maybe even Duke Nukem... if we ever see it.

Also a good game for this engine would be "Alien Vs Predator 3" if we're ever that lucky

Never ever. id Software is known for developing great engines.

@vthokiesrmoo

I agree with you 100 percent...so many people on this site are anti-sony for some reason...not that it bothers me you have your own taste and opinion..but you can never say anything good bout sony or they will try to down play it...you can never ever say anything bad about a Wii on this site or a 360...watch your mouth you might get banned if you talk bad about Nintendo or 360...matter fact I think I said too much :x

Oh and Im not new to this site I just forgot my last usernames Pw and email I used to sign up...

well, GG belongs to sony. the engine is most likely to be shared among SCEWWS studios.

I guess we'll see?? Seems like the only people likely to use the "Killzowned" engine, are high budget developers that don't already have reliable engines to use. That rules out EA and pretty much all the multi-plat titles obviously. I imagine if a developer really wanted to make a great looking game, without spending a fortune, they will likely go the route of the Unreal Engine given it is also a graphical power house, is much more commonly used, costs less, and will be available for multiplat titles.

If they want to make the engine proprietary to the PS3, there will not be many developers using it at all. The money is with multi-platform titles and the Wii/360 right now when it comes to software. Developers that are not first party to Sony would be foolish to use this engine and shut off the larger selling markets.

The URE3 isnt that great. Unreal tournament sucked. As for the money, games like KZ2 sell consoles. The more games like this, the more user base the PS3 gets and the more the dev will make.

This is exactly why M$ is hurting our industry though. They release a sub-par console that is capable of very good graphics and keep the developers from pushing there games due to its inefficiencies. With just the PS3 and Wii, the devs would be able to focus on the PS3 and make amazing games. As is stands now, they either need to make there game on the PS3 to the specs they desire and port to 360, leaving content behind or offering DLC or they need to make it on both at the same time and gimp the PS3 version once they reach there limits on the 360. Exclusive is where its at on the PS3 right now. We are a lot pickier when it comes to our game purchases because we are probably an older crowd. It seems to me that the 360 and Wii have a ton of shovel ware that gets eaten up. Not so on the PS3 front.

Hmmm.......the J man wonders what you were saying last gen when the ps2 was the inferior console and was king of shovelware.

While the PS2 had shovelware, it had a healthy supply of great games releasing from both Sony and third parties. Balance is key.

And your saying the 360 doesnt have this balance?

I am. It doesn't have one game that interests me or I cant get on the PS3 as well. As for the PS2 comment, I owned a GC, DC and a PS2. The GC much like my Wii gets little to no play and the DC was sold to buy my PS2 due to its death as a console. The xbox was not an option for the same reason the 360 isnt....it sucks. I dont like the controller and it has no games. Nothing has changed IMO. The controller is smaller and the console breaks more. Thats it.

Thats all nice, good and lovely. I have a fetish for A,B,C etc.

A. Why would a developer use an engine that excludes the biggest market for shooters?
B. Are there any developers whom you would actually care about available to use this engine?
C. Why would a developer looking for an engine look past UE3, Cry-engine, Source engine etc which are multi-platform to use this one?
D. Any new development starting now wouldn't be seen again until mid/late 2011 at earliest and the PS3s sales are slowing so its a big risk for any developer to make.

A. Unreal Engine is being used for RPG...The Last Remnant...just cuz KZ is a shooter doesn't mean engine will only make shooter games.

B. Yes, those who have been having hard time coding for PS3.  More explanation on D.

C. Did you skip reading about this engine being PS3 exclusive?  BTW source engine is outdated. Valve needs to come with a new engine.  Cry-engine? Try CryEngine2? Does any console game use CryEngine2 btw?  I dont think consoles can handle the CryEngine2.  Maybe a toned down version yes, but not a full blown CryEngine2 you see on Crysis.  I have yet to see a console game that uses CryEngine2. Please dont say FarCry2 uses CryEngine2. It does not use it.  It uses another engine made from CryTek called Dunia.

D. Some developers might have already decided to change the engine mid development, which won't make development as long.  Which mean they may have the story line, character model, maps, items, etc, already made. All that's left for them is to re-code it into the engine.  It's not like they have to start all over and think about how the characters will look, which items will do what, etc.

A. That game also had technical issues. This engine is designed a certain way, to make this square peg fit into a round hole requires the developer to re-work it.

B. Those who have a hard time tend to already be in the Xbox 360/PC camp, like for example Valve.

C. Exclusive to the lowest selling platform with the highest development costs, competing with some of the most expensive games in the generation/ever for attention. Does not make sense... Furthermore Dunia is actually an Ubisoft engine btw. The only developers who will use it are either insane or Sony 1st/2nd party.

D. They will also have to rework the engine, and until they know what art assets they can use at what level of detail they will have to stall development. See also A.

@CGI: If rumours of a Nvidia/Sony departure are correct then the PS4 will have a different architecture. The new architecture may not be as favourable to say deferred rendering. So with games taking 24 months to develop, we won't see more than one generation of games before the high end developers start their next generation efforts.

A. Is that UR Engine's fault?  So how is that related to KZ engine being used for something other than shooter?

B. There are numerous other developers out there.  It only makes it easier for the smaller development companies.  Valve won't really matter too much because they're more inclined to use their own engine.  Companies that have their own engine aren't likely to use KZ engine.  Companies such as Kaos Studio who stopped development of Frontline Fuel of War due to problems developing for the PS3 will most likely be looking into using the KZ engine.

C. You just said the same thing I said mostly.  KZ engine is going to lower development cost which is the purpose of making an engine in the first place. KZ engine is trying to get rid of what you have said...high development cost. PS3 might be the lowest selling platform but it does sell enough softwares for companies to actually think of using the KZ engine.  Dunia engine part, mistake on my part. I was talking too much about CryEngine that CryTek just slipped out even though I knew it was Ubisoft.

D. Uhhhh...did you read what I wrote??

ok now i go back to scrimming....anyone want to play deathrun with me??....HOOOOOOOOOOOOO

"This is exactly why M$ is hurting our industry though. They release a sub-par console that is capable of very good graphics and keep the developers from pushing there games due to its inefficiencies."

Wait, what? This is, believe it or not, one of the most idiotic fanboy posts I've ever seen. 360 is a sub-par console? based on what criteria? and it's inefficiencies? Oh the irony, since MS's platform is far EASIER for developers to get the horsepower out of, whereas coding for the PS3 platform takes longer for the same result. Less effort for the same result = EFFICIENCY, not inefficiency. It's good to consult a dictionary every once in a while, chief. Also, you can hardly call the 360 sub-par because they decided to not put out a $600 beast that noone could afford, promptly destroying their chances at meeting their goals. Besides, MS didn't have a new format they wanted to try to push at the expense of their loyal fans.

"With just the PS3 and Wii, the devs would be able to focus on the PS3 and make amazing games." Oh really? Instead of making amazing games on the 360? Your complaint seems to be simply that the 360 has stolen your favorite console's thunder.

"We are a lot pickier when it comes to our game purchases because we are probably an older crowd. It seems to me that the 360 and Wii have a ton of shovel ware that gets eaten up. Not so on the PS3 front."

First of all, 360 has the highest attach rate. Do you think it's millions of 14 year old kids with tons of expendable income? Hardly. The attach rate indicated an older crowd with money to blow. One good year of games and you're trying to be elitest? Remember the first year of PS3 software? Disappointment after disappointment. And the only reason it's early games weren't considered shovelware were because games like Lair were bigger budget games that were just terrible, instead of low budget terrible games. Shovelware is a natural result of a console being successful and moving hardware units, so devs try to cash in on the userbase... Congrats, the PS3 won't have to deal with much shovelware.

That is wher you are mistaken. The 360 does not give the same result. Uncharted, Uncharted2, KZ2, GT5P. All games that look better than any 360 exclusive. The 360 has a higher attach rate due to its shovelware. Its all the crap games that get picked up by the 360 and wii that give it such a high attch rate. Look at games like GTA. Went multi and made a ton of money. The game suffered due to lack of media space and still sold at a higher attch rate on the PS3.....number of copies sold vs. number of consoles sold.  I never stated that the Ps3 doesnt have shovelware, nor did I state its early games were great. LAIR was an excellent game with horrible controls. Just like RE5 is now.  My point about focusing on the PS3 without the 360 is that the Wii sells its own games. 3rd party games dont sell well for it. So instead of devs taking the easy road and developing games on a console that breaks 300+% more and lacks basic features that M$ started with like a HDD in every console, wi-fi and bluetooth, they would be able to make truly stellar games on a console that could handle it.

I do however welcome a company that pushes technology further. Why would I want to keep the same tired format around for years on end when there is something better. BD is a far better format then DVD no matter how you look at it. Just like plasma is a far better technology than CRT. It takes companies like Sony to move us forward. Companies like M$ seem to be content with putting out the same crap, calling it something different and selling it for twice as much.  Kinda like what Nintendo did with the Wii and M$ keeps doing with there OS.  The Ps3 is too expensive for the masses, that point I agree with. Sony has to live with that and I expect they undertood that to an extent when launching. They will however have a price cut this year now that the BD format is taking off and the PS3 will see a huge jump in sales......just like the 360 did when they dropped there price. Up until they dropped the price, they were getting outsold week after week by the Ps3 in almost every region.
