So... why are people jumping up and down about someone's blog?? With his hopes and dreams for the future of the ps3?

O btw:

topic question was: I’m not sure if you are able to disclose this but will KZ2’s deferred rendering engine be available (leased) to other ps3 dev’s, 1st party or otherwise?

"I'm sure we would be willing to share tech with other first party developers, but it is not a matter of throwing our engine over the fence and wishing them luck with it. Our engine is built specifically for Killzone 2 and our tools-sets and not really set up for middleware and we would not have the resources to fully support other teams with it. Short answer, no."

oh , you mean how Gears of War uses a slightly modified version of the UE to make it more suitable for that game in particular?

EDIT: O yea, btw

No. UE is a general-purpose engine which got customized for Gears of War, KZ2's engine was most likely special-purpose from the start (i.e. made with KZ2 in mind).

@CGI
You speak nothing but the truth.

@Nightsurge
obviously if you are going for MP development this would not be the engine to use. Yet the KZ engine means that developers can no longer whine about struggles of PS3 development due to UE or other like it not being compatible. KZ engine will probably allow the integration of other engines(most do anyway). It also means quicker development times.

This will be ushering in a slew of new exclusives. If not from 3rd party, then from 1st for sure(and after seeing what Sony's 1st party can do you dont really need 3rd).

Speak to nintendo in the N64 and Gamecube era

Not necessarily. The article itself states that Sony isn't just going to hand it to anyone. Sure that means that the quality of titles should be greater for games using that engine (unless Sony do it by name only and we get the first crappy game from Bethesda etc), but it doesn't mean there'll be a "slew of new exclusives".

On top of that, I doubt the Killzone engine would be made available without substantial cost (something developers need to factor in, which is why most of the big name ones make their own). Then the PS3 fanboys have to factor in that no other game will look as good as Killzone 2 on that engine, so you'll most likely get a below Gears 1 game with it graphics wise (not saying the engine sucks, but there's no way anyone else could push that engine as much as guerilla who made it has).

Do you really want that?

Let's not forget that the Killzone 2 engine excels in motion, special effects and lighting, how would that translate in any other genre? (I doubt a slower, stealth game would look as good, because KZ2 looks great when it's brutal, and it's brutal when the player is sprinting full throttle).

So anyway, will this new engine create more PS3 exclusives? Sure, it's not unreasonable to assume that. What's unreasonable, is to say that this new engine will be used by every new developer and that it'll mean alot more exclusives for the PS3 (when in reality it'll be 3 or 4 max over 5 years). You've also got to look at how the engine would handle a slower pace game as opposed to an FPS.

@Calamity

That is no different then the UE. Yet some in this thread would like to pretend that it is.
To get the UE you need a liscense and be appart of an affiliation. I know because I will be learning it at school.

It is not a freeware engine like Gamestudio or something. Of course you will pay for it. Yet paying for an engine that you can create an entire game in, or developing your own are completely different in budget. And of course one of the main criterias for the engine would be PS3 exclusive. This makes the amount of active participants small but nonetheless, greater then it initially was.

Which is exactly what the OP is saying, nothing more.

C'mon guys lets be real here you don't have to fight tooth and nail whenever us PS3 owners try to say some positive things about our console or make some cool or fun predictions about what might be done with it (im looking at you squilliam and nightsurge).

If you own all the consoles (or use to own all the consoles in my case, now I roll straight PS3) then you should know the PS3 is by far the most quality console on the market. It's a pleasure to just turn my PS3 and dabble around with all my photos on my 250 gig hdd as it sits there silently begging me to play it, or playing music on it with the awesome Earth visualizer !! Sony's console has the best games in the industry IMO right now, but if you don't agree right now, then certainly in due time i think we can all agree they will. Sony has the best 1st party game developers in the world. The 360 was a great console to own the past few years but its all PS3 from here on out.

Oh, and play Warhawk a lot :). I find it to be one of the most unique and fun experiences I have had with a game in a looooong time.
