Forums - Gaming - The reason companies create new IP’s and Nintendon’t? (hardcore anyway)

Well Nintendo has successful “hardcore” IP’s and therefore doesn’t see the need to create more. Even if they wanted to it is hard these days but when they do come up with something good they will do it. They do not want to create something new just for the sake of doing something new.

Now for other companies it is a different thing. Most of them do not have the ability to reinvent their IP’s and make them feel new again. Tell me how many companies have succeeded in doing what Nintendo does to keep their games selling even after many sequels (or whatever you want to call it)?

This is mostly why you see new games created, because they cant keep all their games alive and therefore need new IP’s to stay afloat.

So they don't make new ones because they don't need them? So they don't care enough about their fans to make new ones.

Sony frequently has great new IP's on thier console. Resistance, Uncharted, LittleBigPlanet, Valkyrie Chronicles all fron this gen alone.

Well I for one never complain about them not doing new stuff and as I said they will do new stuff when they have something good. I’d rather have something good than something new just for the sake of it being new.

Well yeah they need to fill in the gap for the third-party exclusives they are loosing. And they have lost so much money that they need to create new stuff to get some money back.

its becauase we already have a set good number of nintendo IPs, atleast 10, where other consoles dont. for instance, the 360, the only new IPs that i see people really caring about to the next console are halo and gears of war.
for sony, theres like god of war, and ya.

nintendo isnt creating new IPs also because right now they're busy getting another audience in. IMO, its working great, and they're doing exactly what they should for now. new IPs could come later, since we're getting tons of 3rd party support now

Let me see...

-Capcom still has Megaman, Resident Evil and Street Fighter
-Square Enix has Final Fantasy and Dragon Quest
-Konami has Metal Gear, Suikoden, Castlevania (without counting Dance Dance, Winning Eleven or Jikkyō Powerful Pro Yakyū)
-Namco Bandai has Pac-Man, Tales, Tekken
-Sega has Sonic, Virtua Figther, Phantasy Star
-Atlus has Shin Megami Tensei
-Microsoft has Halo
-Take 2 has GTA

I could mention more but i think i made my point...

1) Valkyria Chronicles is a Sega IP, and has nothing to do with Sony. That would be the same as saying that Nintendo has Zack & Wiki, or Boom Blox, or any other new game released on the system

2) Nintendo just created the Mii's, which has been a huge success. Disaster Day of Crisis was released too, but it didn't fare to well.

3) Miyomoto has made comments about IP and how it is hard to come up with a new one. However, if a game idea (like Disaster Day of Crisis) comes through Nintendo and it doesn't fit a current IP, then they create a new one for it.

If you drop a PS3 right on top of a Wii, it would definitely defeat it. Not so sure about the Xbox360. - mancandy

Hmm I think your wrong and i'll explain why.

That is an incredibly backwards reason to not invent , both invention and innovation are neccasery for the progression of the gaming industry and for Nintendo to maintain/attain marketshare . Without the invention of the "Wii XXX" there would have been no suitable platform for Nintendo to demonstrate the abilities of the Wii mote , they've innovated with the Wii XXX franchise they created to give you Wii SPorts, Play , Resort etc , I think the sucess of their newest invention Wii XXX series negated the need for Nintendo to bring about anything very different.

Now for other companies it is a different thing. Most of them do not have the ability to reinvent their IP’s and make them feel new again. Tell me how many companies have succeeded in doing what Nintendo does to keep their games selling even after many sequels (or whatever you want to call it)?

The argument that they don't have the ability to make their IP's "feel new again" is an incredibly subjective one and i'm guessing your basing that on sales performance , your argument is really "not alot of 3rd parties are capable of making franchises that sell well for the long term" that's a better argument but one that's still open to criticism , I could list at least 5 franchises that still sell well without googling it.

This is mostly why you see new games created, because they cant keep all their games alive and therefore need new IP’s to stay afloat.

Well yeah , but even Nintendo isn't the same company now as it was 10 years algo . Invention has still played a major role in the innovation of the Mario series , 3D technology in Mario 64 , Anologue Stick , Motion Controls in SMG . No series could survive without innovation inspired by invention , if Nintnendo had to innovate their franchises using only existing technology for the next 50 years they'd be filling for bankrupcy long before the 50 year period expired... I guarantee that. And it's not because of anything particular to Nintendo but that's how all business operates.

Well they are inventing and innovating just not in new forms of hardcore games (at least nothing now we know of). They are using that on the Wii xxx stuff and reinvent their old franchises. Now I am not saying they are doing so with all their games. And as I said they will create new hardcore games when they see something that has potential

Yeah I am basing it on sales.

Absolutely that is why they continue to innovate in hardware so they can do the same with games. Yes that I know :)

Its like I said in another thread. Nintendo has basically been backed into a corner the last 10 years. Third parties have alienated them and a good portion of the market thought of them as 'washed up'. So what did they do? They made a cheaper system with a new line-up of games. Did they re-invent themselves? No. They've always been the system for 'everybody'. They just made they're system even MORE accessible for that market. They never dropped their major IPs. If anything, they already surpassed their GC lineup in the first year and probably will best their N64 line up by the end of the Wii lifetime.

The ones who re-invented themselves was MS and Sony. They focused their attention onto one market. The 14-25 year olds. aka the 'Mature' gamer.

Six upcoming games you should look into:

Probably the biggest reason Nintendo doesn't make new IP's every gen is because most of their teams are dedicated to 1 or a handful of franchises. Also several of their new IP's last gen were relative flops with the exception of Pikmin.

Pixel Art can be fun.
