I think it's a huge step up. I don't have it but I've been reading all the importer impressions and it sounds a lot better this time around. There's a distinguished single and multiplayer mode. Single player, you have a full party of 4 this time around with a full storyline, voice acting, FMV, etc. The individual characters are all more unique too for their races. They level up this time (real HP/MP), and learn skills to use in combat with different methods of attacking. Reminds me a lot of Mana.
I think this trailer really sends the message home.

Revenant Wings didn't really do as well as expected either, FF Tactics on PSP was a little disappointing, FF XII: International - I do think Japan are becoming a little tired of Final Fantasy. |
They're getting tired of these FF spin-offs that don't have the quality or the original Sakaguchi team that the roman numeral FFs have.

is that the gambit system? lol nice, thats the best battle system yet from Square so if it is or a variation of it that will be a great game.

Well I have ZERO faith in FF7:CC mostly because Dirge of Cerebus sucked. |
Well, Dirge really was just spat out w/o much development into it.
This game was annouced in 2004! It has been in the making for years!
