If only it were that simple... Think of it this way: from 1985-1995 one company - Nintendo - made up probably 75% of gaming. From 1995-2005 Sony did well, but still never owned more than 60% of the console market. Noone touched Nintendo's monopoly on handhelds, and no company was dominant on PCs.

 

The days of monopoly are done. There are too many platforms, from cellphones to PCs to multiple consoles, too much software is being written, there are too many forms of gaming out there. Sony and Nintendo understand this, which is why they're pursuing their respective strategies. Microsoft seems to partly get it, but still has moments when it acts like a clunky 1990s-style monopolist - the hardware debacle, pricy peripherals, lack of storage space, etc.
