Forums - Sales - Xbox 360 NPD and our attach ratios are vastly different: Explanations?

Some of the difference is that 1-2 games come with most Xbox 360s. That should bring the NPD ratio somewhere above 9. I have the Arcade and it came with 1 disc game and 6 XBLA games. However, most Xbox 360s sold over the holiday season came with 2 disc games.

First... @Oyv. The attach ratio MS states is from NPD

It is true NPD does not count bundled games.... but unless there are some I don't know about, they don't account for that much.

The Christmas bundles (Sega Superstar Tennis, Lego Indiana Jones, Kung Fu Panda and in 2007 Forza 2 and Marvel:Ultimate Alliance) account for only about 8 million sales..... which should be about 0.5 on the attach ratio.

In other words if NPD had tracked them, it would be 8.6ish instead of 8.1

I think part comes from pack ins, adding those probably gets the 360 close to 9 in the US. The rest might be a sign of vgchartz overestimates the legs of games.

It is definitely not worldwide sales that causes it, the whole response is about NPD numbers.

Very interesting. I wonder what we overtracked?

And snuggle the girls be they short or tall,
Then follow young Mat whenever he calls,
To dance with Jak o' the Shadows."

I think VGC software numbers tend to be inflated because there's a huge pressure from people whining all the time about their favorite games being undertracked. The only way to please them is to adjust the numbers up a bit, so  everyone gets happy.

The holiday bundles for 360 add 5-10m units of sw which NPD would not count in the attach ratio.

360 has a base of 2m-3m units or so in Americas regions outside the USA which probably adds 10-15m.

The rest of it is just different ideas about legs I'd say.

but that also adds the extra 360 units, which means the attach ratio is largely unchanged.

If I add 10 and 15 million to NPD's total (so your high end estimation) I still only get around 140 million copies of software sold, which is still a discrepancy of 30 million. And NPD might even track more titles which only makes the gap larger.

I thought other games had previously been bundled with Xbox 360, like Halo 3.

Well that is what I wanted to ask.... as far as I know, in America the only official Microsoft bundles are those where they added free games on various models for Christmas. If you can find proof another game not from the 5 I mentioned had an official bundle then I will have a look (was Halo 3 bundled wth the special ugly Halo X360?)

BHR-3s thread about the pricing/model/bundle history doesn't mention Halo being bundled.
