Why does the US government give money back to people?

cause you pay your taxes thoughout the whole year. If you pay to much, then you get a refund. Also, every once in a while, the government decides to temporarily lower the tax rate, which means even if you payed the perfect amount the previous year, you'll get whatever they decided to give back to you.

So there could be some people who have paid less than they should have and so have to cough up more to the government?  Oh no.  Poor them.

Are you filing as a student, even though your out of school already? n_n

LOL no.

I am actually surprised at it myself. I worked for 10 of the 12 months this year, the 2 months where I was unemployed also brought in no pay because I was denied unemployment. I jumped off a table and kicked a co-worker, lol.

My girlfriend files as a student. I just seem to get lucky each year.

I wish I knew someone that can inflate my returns somehow.

yes, you could have to pay more. Last year I had to pay $150 in state taxes due to my wife's job not paying enough state taxes on her income, but I got back like $1000 in federal taxes. You can adjust how much you pay throughout the year, and most people have it set up so they don't get much back in the end.

If you drop a PS3 right on top of a Wii, it would definitely defeat it. Not so sure about the Xbox360. - mancandy

Anybody know if it's still possible to get taxes back from a year that you forgot to do your taxes?

not a clue, but I doubt it. I'm assuming that year was one where you made under the limit for being forced to do taxes. If not, I wouldn't want to remind them...

^ Wish I could help you there but I have no clue.

What do you claim anyways? I claim "0". That way they take the most possible and I end up getting more back on my tax return.

From what I estimate I should be getting between $450 and $600 back from the US Gov when my income tax check comes in. I am considering repurchasing a Wii.

What I want from you guys is a reason why I should or should not buy one. Note that if i dont buy a Wii I;m goiing to put like $200 into savings.

If you're interested in the games it has to play then buy one.

If not then don't.

It's not like the price of the Wii is going up or it's going to disappear any time soon so if there's nothing it has that you want to play right now then just hold off on getting it now and get it later when it does.

You are actually best off getting 0 back at the end of the year, because then you can just invest that extra 1k and have $30 extra at the end of the year for a pizza and movie and you still have your 1k

Just looked it up, you can file taxes you haven't in past years and get money back.

I claim "1"
