cause you pay your taxes throughout the whole year. If you pay to much, then you get a refund. yes, you could have to pay more. Last year I had to pay $150 in state taxes due to my wife's job not paying enough state taxes on her income, but I got back like $1000 in federal taxes. You can adjust how much you pay throughout the year, and most people have it set up so they don't get much back in the end.
