Forums - Sony - Has the PS3 taught sony a valuable lesson?

Hmmmm I hope Sony learned its lesson...I have a Ps3 and I love it...I think the main problem Sony did was making a system that was far too tech Savvy for the time...

Sd card slots,Usb Ports everywhere,Blue Ray, a powerful multi-core processor, GPU and CPU way too advanced....

BUT I feel Sony wen all out on technology because the generation prior saw the Xbox as Graphically more powerful than the Ps2....so Sony felt they needed to bring out the most powerful system this time around....

Sony will bounce back from this of course you'll see...I hope they stick to hardcore gamers though and not go the way of THE WII...Im glad this happen to Sony though because think about it....their heads were already all gassed up at the success of the Ps2 that they thought they were the KING of the gaming industry....

Im glad this happen that way Sony can come down from the clouds they were in and realize their is some stiff competition out here for Sony...

I think Sony knows what they are doing and in the end will be the ones laughing at all of us...

Who knows, but its certainly sent a message to MS and Nintendo and any other potential console makers that releasing a $600 console doesnt work, even if you've had huge successes in the previous generation. Their arrogance and stupidity is hurting them now.

Arrogance is 110% there....  Did someone from sony once say 'people will buy the PS3 without games'? and another qoute that is in the Guinness world records 2008: Gamers edition is 'The next Gen doesn't start until we say it does'.  Now what can you say to that.

PC gaming rules.....

If sony has "failed" this gen, or "suck and are coming last because they did all the wrong things" What should they have changed or done differently? Made a cheap console? It's not selling well because it's expensive, but it's expensive for a few big reasons, and its those reasons specifically why I bought the Ps3.

So there are no lessons to be learned, the ps3 does what it does. End of story.

Judging by the comments from the company's higher-ups, no. :p

I hope for them it's only tactics to deceive competitors (Edit: and limited to pricing, their customers too), otherwise they're in the shit up to their neck. Right now, with most people predicting a price cut, they must be as reticent and misleading as possible, either if they are going to do it or not, otherwise sales would drop in the wait, so, until a cut really happens, I wouldn't give credit to their publicly declared plans about pricing. Other plans not related to pricing can be more confidently trusted, although shit happens, as with LBP botched launch.

Listen I think its fair to say that the PS3 was a gamble that doesnt seem to paying for itself right now but it will. Sony Now has the main Disc base format under their grasps and the fact that they have finally mastered teh cell and developers are getting a clearer understanding we can expect to see better results next gen. Honestly I wan to see what MS has in store for Us in terms of format.

Many have said that MS might go the HD-DVD route but I think they're going to try and push DD or their going to be like Nintendo and create their own Disc format (Yes Nintendo did it this gen and last gen with the Mini Cds and their own variant of DVD's this gen)

"In video game terms, RPGs are games that involve a form of separate battles taking place with a specialized battle system and the use of a system that increases your power through a form of points.

Sure, what you say is the definition, but the connotation of RPGs is what they are in video games." - dtewi

lessons for Sony to take from this gen:

Produce a much cheaper PS4, at least as cheap as the next XBOX
Invest to keep majour exclusives, exclusive to the PS4
Motion sense or equivalent/better type of controller on PS4, perhaps optional
Graphics are great, but theres no point in them if no one can afford them
Blu-Ray is ace, STICK WITH IT for PS4

Actually, the qoute was that they would sell 5,000,000 without out any games.

Ironically, they were almost right. The ps3 didn't start gettinga constant stream of decent releases until the release of Warhawk on August 28th, 2007.  At that point, the ps3 was sitting at 4.586 million units sold.

My take:

Sony strengths -

Pushed Blu Ray and killed HD-DVD
Produced one of the most advanced consoles in history
Instilled the fear of God into MS

Sony weaknesses -

Overlooked the casual crowd
Removed the primary reason for PS2 owners to upgrade - backwards compatibility (which the Wii has, as well as the 360 does now with hard drives)
Lost a grip of exclusives
High price (despite features)
No rumble with initial controllers
Free online but no where near as robust as Xbox LIVE

Thread #394834 on this topic.

Wanna know if they learned a lesson from this gen?? Wait to see what happens next-gen... and the one after that.
