LOL how depressing. They can't even make money with the 360/PS3. Makes you wonder why they don't just switch solely to the Wii. Oh wait maybe they will, once they realize where their money comes from.

They go to the store and buy the game they saw that was on that "Wii would like to play" Commercial before they buy any of that Ubisoft stuff. Seriously, Nintendo's casuals are probably the best out there these times, and because "the audience" doesn't spend much on video games, they'd buy the Nintendo games over Ubisoft for the sole reason that they are Nintendo. They'll buy the game because they saw the commercial with two Japanese guys. EDIT: @jhlennon1 |
EVERYONE knows that Nintendo games sell the most on Nintendo systems but Ubisoft clearly are making profit of these casual games and therefore will continue to make them. That is the way Ubisoft is, just like they make a lot of money with FPS games on the 360/PS3 so they are sending out FPS after FPS game to cash in. That is what the company does, they all do it.
No 3rd party is going to compete with Nintendo games sales on the Wii, whether they be hardcore or casual games. They know that as well, we all do.
And they are not going to lose support from a few million Wii fans, you just hope they will to teach them a lesson. Won't happen though. The games they are producing are such low budget that they don't need to sell millions to make profit, that is the issue.

LOL. They are making money on the 360, hence, Splinter Cell Conviction exclusive to be released next year...
Wii is not the only place to make money, Wii fans really need to get over that.

I guess Pirates is a bad example since it was tremendously popular, but think of movies like "Day After tomorrow" or "Superman Returns". Most people enjoy them yet these movies are so overbudget that they barely turn a profit. "Day After tomorrow" cost about $140 million to make and ticket sales amounted to $186 million. Meanwhile 'crap' movies like Big Fat Greek Wedding make ~$450 million in cinema sales alone and cost the companies less than a million dollars to make. Like I said, people and studios like the big budget movies, but they finance them with all the other crap that they put out there. Same deal with PS3/360 games and the Wii |
Day After Tomorrow
| Distributor: Fox | Release Date: May 28, 2004 |
| Genre: Action Drama | Running Time: 2 hrs. 4 min. |
| MPAA Rating: PG-13 | Production Budget: $125 million |
| Domestic: | $186,740,799 | 34.4% |
| + Foreign: | $356,030,973 | 65.6% |
| = Worldwide: | $542,771,772 |
Add another 20 million for advertising and it is roughly 145 million. Studios take home roughly half of the domestic gross and a third of overseas gross(most movies overseas are distrubited by another company). TDAT made over 200 million and turned a nearly 50 million dollar profit. that is pretty damned good. LoTR turned almost 3 billion dollars in BO revenue for a 350 million dollar investment. HP always turns money. Pirates turns money, Even Spiderman turned money with a massive budget
| Distributor: Sony / Columbia | Release Date: May 4, 2007 |
| Genre: Action / Adventure | Running Time: 2 hrs. 20 min. |
| MPAA Rating: PG-13 | Production Budget: $258 million |

| + Foreign: | $553,677,153 | 62.2% |
| = Worldwide: | $890,207,456 |
roughly 160 million +190 million =350 million nearly a 100 million dollar profit. BTW this doesn't even count DVD sales.
No Studios really on cheaper flims more like an investor will be bearish it is a steady source of income. The Big blockbusters are the bulls they can turn crazy income but they can also crash hard.

Is that really such a hard crash? I know it was expected to make a lot more, but it made some money at least.
And I liked it! Guess I'm that much into sci-fi movies...

Studios don't get 100% of the income from Box Offices. They have to pay distrubitors and for prints and the theaters themselves get a cut. Most films the Rule is 50% domestic 33% overseas. Usually after teh first 2 weeks the theaters keep more money which is why frontloading is good for Hollywood.
In this example Universal made ~44 million domestically and ~51 million dollars overseas for a total of 95 million dollars in income. The film cost 175 million + another 10-15 million in advertising so Universal actually ended up losing about 100 million from the theater run. Stuff like DVD sales and TV and cable help to offset the loss a little bit though.

Wii is just too weak to move big franchise forward. There is no room for development. People say Mario Galaxy looks awesome while it looks way below current average (I'm not talking about artistic appeal but technical aspects). Also I don't agree with eab - definitely it's nice when 12 million Step-up makes 114 million (1:9,50) but it's definitely nicer when 258 million Spider-man 3 makes 890 million (1:3,45). Simply because you have more freaking cash... |
Holy lord, so much for qualified people discussing on this site who have any clue on financials let alone basic mathmatics.
Just to respond: um no, its not. Simple calculation: investing 12 mn and a return of 114 mn, if you do that 20 times, you invest 240 mn and your return is way above 2000 mn.
I rest my case
