No Studios really on cheaper flims more like an investor will be bearish it is a steady source of income. The Big blockbusters are the bulls they can turn crazy income but they can also crash hard.

WATERWORLD

Domestic Total Gross: $88,246,220
Distributor: UniversalRelease Date: July 28, 1995
Genre: Sci-Fi AdventureRunning Time: 2 hrs. 16 min.
MPAA Rating: PG-13Production Budget: $175 million

Domestic: $88,246,220   33.4%
+ Foreign: $175,972,000   66.6%
= Worldwide: $264,218,220

Is that really such a hard crash? I know it was expected to make a lot more, but it made some money at least.

And I liked it! Guess I'm that much into sci-fi movies...

Studios don't get 100% of the income from Box Offices. They have to pay distrubitors and for prints and the theaters themselves get a cut. Most films the Rule is 50% domestic 33% overseas. Usually after teh first 2 weeks the theaters keep more money which is why frontloading is good for Hollywood.

In this example Universal made ~44 million domestically and ~51 million dollars overseas for a total of 95 million dollars in income. The film cost 175 million + another 10-15 million in advertising so Universal actually ended up losing about 100 million from the theater run. Stuff like DVD sales and TV and cable help to offset the loss a little bit though.
