Is that really such a hard crash? I know it was expected to make a lot more, but it made some money at least. And I liked it! Guess I'm that much into sci-fi movies... |
Studios don't get 100% of the income from Box Offices. They have to pay distrubitors and for prints and the theaters themselves get a cut. Most films the Rule is 50% domestic 33% overseas. Usually after teh first 2 weeks the theaters keep more money which is why frontloading is good for Hollywood.
In this example Universal made ~44 million domestically and ~51 million dollars overseas for a total of 95 million dollars in income. The film cost 175 million + another 10-15 million in advertising so Universal actually ended up losing about 100 million from the theater run. Stuff like DVD sales and TV and cable help to offset the loss a little bit though.
