Forums - Gaming - SD CoD:WaW Might be More Profitable than HD Version.

There is some merit to your argument, but at the same time I think you'll run into diminishing returns very fast and the dollar for dollar profit will start to even out.
Maybe that's why the Wii version was seen as a "gimped port." Was it missing features that the HD versions had?

Regardless, I hope your purpose in this argument was not to promote cutting back on the HD versions because they're proven sellers, and continue to outsell the Wii version. The Wii sku will improve as a percentage of the total, but that's a meaningless argument when the initial percentage difference was so enormous.

None of this means I'm anti-Wii version, in fact I expect Modern Warfare 2 will probably release on the Wii given that the engine already exists and in the current economic climate even 1M extra sales is godsent, but I think the focus should remain HD since that's where the vast majority of sales are.

Holy shit this is the worst thread I've ever read. Claude, I've got to say it. You are quite possibly the most condescending user on this entire site and I was trying to hold back my vomit reading all of your disgusting posts. Psrock, you're no better off. I agree with you how annoying this thread is, and frankly I don't think anyone should be bragging about the sales of Call of Duty on the Wii, but your trolling was pretty lame. And stop overhyping the damn Wii version. It got a big adjustment and it's selling well. BIG DAMN DEAL. If the PS2 sold some games far worse than the Xbox and Gamecube counterparts, I don't think anyone would be bragging that it managed to sell, oh, say...1/3 of what the Gamecube version sold.

See? This is why we can't have nice things. Wii games sell well and stupid threads like this happen. This is why at the bottom of my heart I really wished Call of Duty 5 would flop on the Wii. I knew this would happen. I've had so many games ruined by Nintendo fanboys and I'm sick of it. Blah.

I don't care really, all I know is, it got destroyed sales wise. Keep trying to find excuses though, they just keep getting better.

Fear.

It tastes so lovely.

I fear what ?

What does COD Waw being profitable has do with me or anyone here? This is a sales site and frankly, 800k for one of the biggest game released last year is laughable on a console with 46 million users. Thus fanboys come up with excuses to praise it over  the better selling versions.

wait until it sells a million at least.

Your tears...they are so bitter yet, surprisingly satisfying as you scramble for damage control.

Moar. I want to see moar bitter tears.

I have tear of laughter reading the OP trying to compare 800k sales to 7 million. Nice try though, the sad thing about these games on the wii is worst games are selling so much more than the actual good games that deserve it.

He was talking about profitability, not comparing sales. But I can understand how you misread that while typing furiously on your keyboard through a stream of bitter tears. It goes along with the half-assed trolling reserved for Wii Bingo.

It's alright. We can't all be at our best during the stages of grief.

did you just call me a troll? well, lets look at your history for a second................just sad. Now look at mine.

as for the profitability factor, well he really doesnt know and neither do I or you. He is just trying to convince himself that somehow  it might be real. But who cares, and I  do find it funny he added the PS2 version.

Yes, I know. I'm really awesome. But you really shouldn't compare yourself to me, it'll just create a inferiority complex or something.

actually it was more 1.3 million, why cant the wii get the PS2 version added in if the 360 gets the PS3 version?

Anyways again, you are just making it more obvious you have zero understanding of finance. So you really need to STFU.

Did you include the $10 price premium that the 360 and PS3 versions of the game have (even more in Europe, etc) when it came to your analysis of the "profits" this game has had on the various systems?  Who are we kidding, you're basically pulling numbers out of your ass and then telling other people to STFU when they disagree with you.

omg you're so right, wii is much more profitable. Lets just make COD MW 2 on the wii and forget the HD consoles lol...

Yes it may be more profitable on the Wii.

That settles it...SD ports of all future COD games should be made for the wii.

actually, although I cant tell if you are being sarcastic or not, that was my point. The Wii should at worst recieve a quality port of all COD, and maybe even most HD games (cough, RE5, cough)

I think Wii should get RE5 for sure...I mean every other RE is playable ont he Wii. Otherwise I would be happy if all major games got ported to the Wii... I am not against Wii not getting games, I mean it deserves to have the games at this point.

The only thing I don't want to see is wii exclusive development only for major studios...I mean, wii controls have become second nature to to me and they really don't work any better than regular controllers unless playing a specific game that requires swinging input (tennis, boxing, throwing...etc). And one controls are out of the picture or one finds them equal to a regular controller, Wii does offer a less satisfying visual and online experience.

So I do hope Wii gets Modern Warfare 2...but that it doesn't get exclusive Modern Warfare 3... :)

Its also a question of sales vs goodwill.

If the HD versions had to suffer a little due to the attention that was given to the Wii version that is also a cost which cannot be quanified, but at the same time cannot be ignored.

So if the HD versions could have been better/sold more without the Wii version then perhaps thats another cost which must be considered.

Tease.

outlawauron - you're missing the point of the comparison. The point of the OP was to show that when presented with the two options of
Make a PS360PC game or
Make a PS360PCWii game

Activision will get a considerably higher return with only a slightly higher initial investment if they choose the 2nd option, and therefore for this comparison the costs of dialogue etc can be placed on the versions that were certain to be made

Of course it's worth it to make a Wii version. However, the SD versions were not more profitable (and will likely never be) than the HD versions which is what the topic title is.

Um, dollar for dollar it is more profitable. I know more about finance than you do, I am sure of it, dont treat me as some desparate fanboy trying to rationalize my fanboy wet dreams, I said I was not trying to say the Wii version was more imporant. IRR is a widely used measure of what projects are worthwhile and which aren't. However, CFOs also use Net Present Value, which is a much more complex formula. A combination of NPV and IRR is what would be best used. NPV is a bit better than IRR because it accounts much better for total profit being it is not just a %. IRR is quick and easy, that is why many still use it.

All that to say, if anyone says it is not worth the extra 10-25% dev cost of making a Wii version is dead wrong. Because the Wii actually makes a higher IRR on that additional funding than the HD consoles do on the "main" game. Yes this is technicalities, like, if there was no HD version to port from a stand alone Wii game would cost much more. So I would be the IRR on JUST an HD version would still be higher than the IRR, if it was just a Wii exclusive. I did not realize that people wanted to deny COD:WaW any credit. jeez. Does it really scare you that bad that a game is doing well on the Wii?

To those calling me desperate or whatever, you don't get it. Go get a degree or 2 in finance and then come back and you might actually have a clue.

Wow, you just completely insulted my intelligence and completely ignored what I've said.

Call of Duty: World at War was worth making a Wii and PS2 version. I will still stand behind that it is NOT more profitable (in actual numbers) than the PS3 and 360 versions.
