Someone mentioned profit. Surely this is what will be the driving force behind the forthcoming COD wii.

It would be interesting to see the profit made on each console based on the sales of COD:WaW

I mean, did those 800,000+ copies of the wii version make a liitle/lot less, as much as or more money than say the PS3 version.

Surely this is what will decide if the wii gets all the upcoming COD releases.

A lot of the people calling profit on the Wii version are forgetting the huge campaign CoD:Waw Wii got on the US TV during the holydays.

Commercials are not cheap...

I think that is a tad exaggerated. Sure it got ads, but certainly not more than the other systems.

In response to the people who are pointing out the comparison between Wii and PS360 sales, first off it has been proven time and time again that producing a Wii game is dirt cheap in comparison. Lets also remember that no publisher cares about attach rate, they care about profit. Thats it, end of story. This game is more than certainly profitable, despite what the teenage HD fanboy demographic cares to believe.

Figures time!

Average HD breaks even at 1.3 million copies sold.

Wii games on average need a third of those sales to break even and taking into account the lower retail price we'll say it needed around 500k to break even.

It's at 870k now which means 370k copies have made profit. At $US50 a copy, that's a revenue of $18,500,000. Now lets say Activision profits 33% of the net revenue. That means they have profited a total of $6,105,000.

And apparently it had a marketing push in the US over the holidays. I am here to tell you that madden NFL gets a budget of $10 million for marketing a year. Now If you think that WaW on Wii had the advertising even half of the advertising that Madden gets then correct me, but this here proves that Activision HAVE profitted from the Wii version.

Lets also not forget Wii legs. There is a decent chance this game will sell double, or more  the current amount. Once the HD systems get yet another FPS, CoD will more than likely crash. So far it seems like one of the few HD games (and MW) that don't crash after the first week or 2. Look at America Wii vs PS3 numbers this week, there is no doubt the Wii is making more profit this week in the Americas. Even with the 2-1 split in Others the Wii is more than likely ahead. Granted the Wii will never outself either other version, but it simply doesn't have to.

@ puffy

You must be kidding. There is no absolute number for budgets or $ recieved from retailers.

@ Justinian

LOL. The PS3 version has made far more even with puffy's completely ridicoulous comparison.

Well there is certainly no absolute number, a few things a clear, the Wii budget of nearly any game is a fraction (1/3rd-1/4th) of that of HD development, and while the 33% that Puffy mentioned may be wrong, I am pretty sure it is consistent across consoles. I don't think the purpose of the thread is to say that the Wii will or will not create more profit than the PS3, the point is to show that clearly this is a success for Activision. The PS3 and 360 version are as well, obviously.

Well I'll be the first to admit that BigJon made a thread maybe 2 months ago stating he felt the game was undertracked, and I was one of the first to agree due to anecdotal evidence. Zucas was also one of the earlier folks to challenge VGchartz #'s for this game. BigJon also said the game had a chance at 2 million in which many people thought that was an outrageous prediction. Again Zucas was echoing the same thing. So basically my hats tipped to you fellas, good call.

To people continuing to use the flawed logic of "well for Wii's userbase its still a flop" Give it a rest. Was God War for PS2 a flop because it only sold a couple million to a base of 120 million? Just eat crow. The game didn't flop, and has become(ing) a good success for Activision and the Wii. It seems another goal post has been proven wrong.

Bet between Slimbeast and Arius Dion about Wii sales 2009:

If the Wii sells less than 20 million in 2009 (as defined by VGC sales between week ending 3d Jan 2009 to week ending 4th Jan 2010) Slimebeast wins and get to control Arius Dion's sig for 1 month.

If the Wii sells more than 20 million in 2009 (as defined above) Arius Dion wins and gets to control Slimebeast's sig for 1 month.

The game would have to cost tens of millions to not have made a profit. Even the ads are not numerous enough to have exceeded that.

A flashy-first game is awesome when it comes out. A great-first game is awesome forever.

I don't think it has lost Activision money, but it's ludricrious to think that the Wii version has made more profit than the PS3 version.

@ averyblund

Not necessarily. Red Steel cost more than Gears of War to make.

Of course it didn't, but you're missing what's important: profit/investment. The investment in CoD on Wii was much lower than that on the HD consoles. So, it may have a similar ratio of profit to investment.
