Forums - Sony - Square Enix 6 Year Low

Today, it was supposed to be Square Enix's turn, but the Final Fantasy XIII publisher decided yesterday to delay its earnings announcement until February 12 Whatever the factors behind it, the announcement delay had an immediate impact on Square Enix's share price. On Thursday, its value plummeted on the news, closing at ¥1,972 ($21.45) on the Tokyo Stock Exchange. That was its lowest closing price since May of 2003, shortly after one-time competitors Square Co. and Enix Corporation merged. The stock rebounded somewhat on Friday, ending the day at ¥2,080 ($22.62).

This week's Square Enix troubles stand in stark contrast to last August, when the publisher's financial position allowed it to make a $200 million offer for Ninja Gaiden publisher Tecmo. Though Tecmo opted for a now-consummated union with Dynasty Warriors-maker Koei, Square Enix vowed it would look for other acquisitions. Whether it is still in the financial position to do so will be made clear by next week's earnings report.

That's what you get for JRPG exclusivity on X360. It being amidst crisis doesn't help one bit.

I hate to say this, but reap what you have sewn.

It's their own fault for not doing a Western localization for Front Mission 2089.

Bite the hand that feeds you? If that's a reference about Square and Sony, I can confidently say that supporting Sony would not have given them much more success, considering none of their big games have even been released yet. Their problem is that they work slowly and hype things up half a decade before they actually release it.

Certainly releasing Infinite Undiscovery for PS3 would change that. /sarcasm

It's not just that, it's also the fact that they've been pushing back major releases to work on them, for both the HD consoles and the Wii. So they've been incurring major costs without enough smaller projects to sustain them.

Whether they manage to make a good enough return on these projects will be seen over the course of this year and the next.

A game I'm developing with some friends:

It is largely a technical exercise but feedback is appreciated.

Totally. The game that was such an LOL BOMB!!! would have sold millions on the Triple.

Even if sarcasm, do you think MS would greenlight that? heh.

Releasing SO4 on PS3 would help both SE and... me.

When you're almost exclusively supporting the console that has the least potential to sell JRPG's don't be surprised.

Okay, but since The Last Hope didn't release last year, that's neither here nor there.

I wonder, however, why would they delay their earnings announcement? What are usually the reasons for that? Kotaku speculates they might delay DQIX.
