Forums - Sales - Poll: Will the Wii pass the PS2 in sales?

No, PS2 has a lifespan of 7 years already, I don't see the WII last that long.

Well, as ElRhodeo said, it's still much too early to say with certainty, but if we could be certain, it wouldn't be fun to guess, right?

I'm going with a big yes. The system is off to an even quicker start than DS and it has the potential to pull in a lot of new gamers.

I don't understand where people get this idea of the Wii having a short lifespan.

NES: 12 years
SNES: 11 years

The two times Nintendo has been the dominant company in the home console market, their console has been supported for over 10 years.
The PS2 will have a 10+ year lifespan, but it was replaced by the PS3 7 years into its life. Do you really think the PS4 wont' be released for another 9 years? The GC was replaced 6 years into its life but support isn't totally gone for it just yet. The dominant console will always have the extended lifespan because of the support behind it.

To cash in my CC rewards points for $300 in Circuit City gift cards to purchase a 360 or not: That is the question.

Still way to early to say, I´d say by late 08 or early 09 we will see weather the Wii can rampage on or will just sell very good, right now I´d have to go with my gut fealing but since I haven´t eaten anything in the last... lets see...15-20 hours (I´m starved but to lazy to get up and make something...will grab a bite before work though)

So my starved gut sayes YES, once major 3rd parties bring big non-Nintendo AAAs to the (then higher produced) Wii and the price droppes to a 100$-150$ range nothing will stand in its way, everybody from age 3 - 99 will want to have one and the growing middle class in asia will do lots to sell it as well.

Yes, larger audience, more consoles sold in general, and expanding markets in countries such as China, India, etc should mean that the total number of consoles should increase each generation. I think this expanding effect will overcome generally stronger competition to end up with Wii overtaking PS2...

remember almost every successful console sells more in year 2 than year 1

^^ thanx, Avatars need to party to you know

On topic, I think the only things that really go against the Wii having a long run are HD penetration and less graphic power, yet I don´t see these making a huge difference for the casuals which make up most of the sales, all they see is price and games.

Given the sales of the PS3, I fully expect the PS4 to arrive well within the next 9 years.  But we're not talking the PS3 so what does it matter.

Most system sales came before their successor was released. The PS2 had 7 years between it's launch and the launch of the PS3, and it continues to sell because its successor is priced in the stratosphere. If I'm right, the Wii will get 5 years and then be replaced by a relatively low-priced systems which I shall call the Yuu.  I expect the Yuu to be released somewhat early -2011 at the latest- simply because of HD (which is growing rapidly) and the fact that the Wii IS a rather low end system outside of the controller. The experiement worked, no reason Nintendo can't upgrade to better tech (which will be much cheaper by 2011). Anyway, this gives the Wii 5 years of sales without worry of being overshadowed by a successor, two less than the PS2.

I don't know if everyone has noticed, but the PS3 and 360 are slowly starting to overtake the Wii in the US. The last 2 weeks in a row the 2 of them have outsold the Wii. Back in the PS2's hay day the Xbox and Cube were not doing that. Their was only a brief period when MS dropped the price, and one point when Sony had a cross over problem for fat to slimline. I think we will see the PS3 and 360 each outselling the Wii in the US by the end of next year.

As trends go that might mean something only if the Wii wasn't already selling at maximum capacity. We really have no idea what the true demand of the Wii is - only that Nintendo hasn't yet met it. But we can be sure that, at least in the short term, Wii sales are limited by production rates, and those rates are increasing, while neither MS nor Sony have yet any need to increase their output as it still exceeds demand by a good margin.

By that reasoning, the DS should have a much shorter life than the PSP because hardware wise it is inferior and all it has going is the touchscreen.
